Sleep Apnea and Related Health Issues

Sleep Apnea is at last getting mainstream attention. The trucking industry is currently exploring ways of efficiently screening large numbers of drivers for the disorder. National and local media outlets are running "living with" and "what is" Sleep Apnea stories. These actions are driven by a number of recent scientific studies which indicate that Sleep Apnea is correlated to other serious health issues.

If you are reading this newsletter, you already know that Sleep Apnea is serious. You probably also know someone who should be tested but still has not visited a sleep lab. If your friend or loved one is battling diabetes, high blood pressure or certain types of heart disease they should know that being effectively treated for Sleep Apnea is likely to have a positive impact on their short and long term health.

This newsletter explores the links between Sleep Apnea and other medical conditions. Each section discusses a serious health condition and contains links to related studies and articles. Our goal is to bring greater awareness about these connections to our readers.

Heart Disease and Sleep Apnea

People diagnosed with OSA tend to have a higher rate of heart related problems compared to the general public. It is believed that the stress that OSA places on the body, combined with a lack of oxygen, increases blood pressure, which in turn has other negative effects on your cardiovascular health. Approximately 50 percent of those diagnosed with OSA also have high blood pressure, compared to 25 percent of the general population that has high blood pressure. Here is a list of some cardiovascular health issues related to OSA.

Diabetes and Sleep Apnea

Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome have both been linked with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Studies indicate that up to 50 percent of those living with diabetes may also have Sleep Apnea. Recently, manufacturers of CPAP equipment have been bringing more awareness to the medical community about the link between OSA and diabetes, in hopes that both diseases might be diagnosed at the same time.

Depression and OSA

There are indications that people who suffer from OSA may also have a higher rate of depression. However, symptoms of Sleep Apnea and depression such as feeling fatigued, withdrawn, irritable, unmotivated, trouble concentrating or memory problems can often overlap and be difficult to distinguish between. Scientists are continuing to research the connection between these two health problems.
