Learn About BiPAP® and BiLevel Machines

BiPAP is short for Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure, also referred to as a Bilevel CPAP machine. BiPAP machines are similar to CPAP machines; however, BiPAP machines offer a greater level of breathing support. Much like a CPAP machine, a BiPAP or bilevel machine sends air into your mask via tubing. While CPAP provides a single, constant pressure, BiPAP uses two distinct pressure settings: one for inhaling and one for exhaling.

Why Buy a BiPAP Machine?

While there’s some aspect of choice when deciding between APAP and CPAP, most people won’t truly be considering a BiPAP machine unless otherwise ordered by their healthcare provider. Here are a few reasons someone might choose a BiPAP machine:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD)
  • Obstructive, Central, or Complex Sleep Apnea
  • Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS)
  • Heavily Impaired Natural Breathing
  • Pneumonia
  • Poor Breathing Post-Operation

If breathing is always or almost always difficult for you, or if you have difficulty swallowing, a BiPAP may not work for you and your healthcare provider may need to recommend a more invasive form of ventilation.

Types of BiPAP Machines for Sale

There are many BiPAP machines that feature heated humidification, such as the ResMed AirCurve 10 and Luna G3 BiPAP. Other features that different bilevel machines will typically feature include:

  • Climate Control
  • Ramp Settings
  • Whisper Quiet Operation
  • Data Tracking
  • Auto Start/Stop

When prescribing BiPAP therapy, your healthcare provider may recommend a specific BiPAP model or specific machine features they want your machine to have. While you may be able to find a cheaper and smaller BiPAP machine that's more budget-friendly, you'll usually be sacrificing some sort of data tracking or comfort feature that could make life much easier.

Compact, travel BiPAP machines are few and far between, and while BiPAP machines are more expensive than CPAP machines on average, you'll want to make sure to choose a BiPAP machine that will do everything you need it to in favor of saving money.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are BiPAP Masks the Same as CPAP Masks?

Yes, BiPAP and CPAP masks are one in the same. BiPAP machines use the same hose dimensions as CPAP machines, which means there are no unique connectors or size differences, allowing you to use your CPAP mask interchangeably with the majority of CPAP, APAP, or BiPAP machines.

  • Are BiPAP Machines Loud?

BiPAP machines are no louder than CPAP machines and average around 26 to 33 decibels during operation, or the same volume as a whispered conversation. If you find that your machine is too noisy, check for air leaks in your mask and tubing, or try sleeping with earplugs if your equipment appears to be functioning correctly.

  • Why Are BiPAP Machines More Expensive Than CPAP Machines?

Where CPAP machines use one set pressure, BiPAP machines feature two distinct pressures for treating Central Sleep Apnea and other respiratory diseases, such as COPD or OHS. Unlike CPAP machines, some BiPAP machines can even deliver breaths on a timed basis, and can even initiate breathing if you don’t inhale after a set amount of time. Due to their advanced features and treatment capabilities, BiPAP machines are typically more expensive than CPAP machines.

  • How Long Does a BiPAP Machine Last?

A BiPAP machine, when maintained properly, should last between three and five years, and most experts recommend a new machine after five years of ownership. Ensure that your air filter is regularly cleaned or replaced (depending on your machine’s filter type) to avoid dust buildup that can cause problems inside your machine.

  • Can I Use a BiPAP Machine With an Oxygen Concentrator?

Yes, you can use your oxygen concentrator with BiPAP, typically with the help of an Oxygen Enrichment Adapter, which is placed after your humidifier or before your CPAP mask. Some masks may even feature an oxygen port directly on the frame for easy integration.

  • How Often Should a BiPAP Machine Be Cleaned?

Cleaning the machine itself isn’t as important as keeping your tubing, cushion, mask, and humidifier chamber clean. By following the recommended cleaning schedule for these items, and especially by replacing or cleaning your air filter on a regular basis, your machine will continue to function normally and your health will not be compromised by unclean equipment.

Great Machine

Was using a ResMed S9 for 6 years and the motor finally gave out. Found out the AirCurve 10 is the new model. Has been great so far this first week. Did not realize mine was not functioning as well as it should. Very happy with the service, customer service was excellent.
