The Sandman Auto CPAP machine is designed to provide accurate therapy pressure using an advanced Adaptive Pressure Stability system that helps in detecting respiratory events. This is the premium model in the Sandman line. The Auto is equipped with pressure and flow sensors that detect apneas, hypopneas, inspiratory flow limitations and snoring. Once an event occurs, the Auto reacts using an enhanced algorithm that smoothly adjusts the pressure during events.
The Sandman Series uses Covidien's unique Adaptive Pressure Stability (APS) technology that limits the peak to peak variations of CPAP pressure when a user breathes in and out. Adaptive Pressure Stability responds quickly and accurately to several common conditions that result in changes from your prescribed pressure down to each breath.
Common conditions affecting Pressure
- Switching Masks
- Mask leaks
- Altitude
- Natural respiratory effort
- Barometric pressure
- Sleep stage
- Body position
The Sandman Auto records compliance data which allows a digital signal processor to work interactively with the user and provides accurate flow control. For advanced therapy effectiveness, use the Sandman Therapy Software to help visualize user sessions and take control of your sleep therapy.
The device is quiet, discreet and user-friendly. Small and light, traveling with the Sandman is convenient. Use either AC or DC power from an external battery source. If altitude is an issue, the Auto Altitude Compensation feature accounts for barometric changes. All Sandman CPAP units contain an advanced pressure transducer that compensates for altitudes up to 9,000 feet, which could effect your cpap as much as 3cmH2o of pressure.
Covidien also addresses the need for humidity, incorporating a built-in heated humidifier, together weighing only 2.75 pounds. The humidifier is located to the rear of the CPAP with a water chamber that is easy to clean. Using a new technology, “HumidControl”, the humidifier provides the best temperature according to the relative humidity outside the water chamber. This prevents water from collecting in the CPAP hose and keeps the humidification level constant throughout the night.

Terrific First Experience
December 24, 2009
(5 out of 5) by James B, Thornton, CO
"I was looking for a small, light Auto CPAP machine with a humidifier suitable for travel.
The Sandman Auto HC seemed to fit that ticket the best for me based on its specs and the only feature it seemed to be lacking was some sort of pressure release on exhale that a few other models from other brands offered.
This unit is extremely quiet, quite compact and light, and is very easy to use. So far I seem to be getting more effective treatment at lower average pressures than I got from the unit used in my sleep study (at least according to the units session summary) and its lack of pressure release on exhale does not seem to bother me at all.
I find this unit very comfortable and effective and am already getting a better sleep, waking feeling much more refreshed, and feeling like I have more energy later in the day.
The only settings I have fiddled with are the humidification level, the "comfort pressure" which I turned up from 4 to 5, and the ramp time which I turned from 20 minutes to OFF. I really like the session summary that shows duration, average pressure, average leak, and AHI. The display and controls are clear and easy to use. The humidifier has plenty of capacity and is easy to fill. The single standard power cord with no AC adapter needed is a great travel feature as well. Also comes with a very nice case for the unit, humidifier tank, hose, and mask.
So far I am extremely pleased."

Sandman Auto HC CPAP-Excellent
January 28, 2009
(5 out of 5) by Michael M, OH
"Directions very clear, comes preprogramed for you, except the moisture(humidifier)you adjust yourself. Easy to use. Must be extremely sure that the cover is closed securely and that the seal for the water tank is in the correct placement or machine does not function properly. These were the only two hints I found to help the next consumer. Otherwise, it is a great functioning machine and I highly recommend it."

A better mousetrap...
November 07, 2008
(5 out of 5) by Margaret G, VT
"Although I'd heard of xPAP machines other than the two big names, I hadn't seen a reason to switch. I was originally looking for a backup/travel machine. The more I read the more I liked the idea of the Sandman Auto. One of the things I noticed was the pressure limit to avoid "chasing" apneas that may not be obstructive apneas. Since this may have been the problem I had with my regular APAP, I was curious to see if it would make a difference. I had read good things about Puritan Bennett (previous name for this brand).
Here's what I found: no more blue lights to keep me awake(!), quieter, humidifier with better capacity. The LCD shows the previous night's hours, AHI, and a note if leaks were "normal". Much additional information is available if one has the software. I especially like the fact that there is no proprietary database. I get a PDF report *and* an option to export the data to an Excel spreadsheet so I can create additional charts and tables.
The supplied reports seem very complete. In addition, this machine differentiates between obstructive and central events and records flow limitations. After two nights, I have reversed my plans. The Sandman Auto will be my primary machine. It's still not "tiny" but I'm very happy I ordered this machine!"
