Full Product Description

Respironics introduces "System One" and C-Flex Plus through a new line of CPAP machines. The PR Auto CPAP Machine is an intelligent solution that knows when, why, and how changes should occur to consistently and effectively provide optimum sleep therapy. New System One technologies like Humidity Control with Dry Box and Resistance Control for use with any mask, all are helping users achieve effective therapy. The PR Auto comes standard with carrying case, bag, memory card, manuals and now packaged with the Respironics Performance Tubing.

Respironics also listened to the CPAP community and removed the "blue light" LED. The PR was placed in a dark room and the new power light could barely be seen. No more insomnia from excess system lights. The only common parts shared with the M series is the Power Supply. The PR system comes with a separate, external power brick and allows the overall CPAP to stay compact.

System One Humidity Control (Optional)

The PR CPAP humidifier and water chamber design are breakthroughs for managing rain-out and water damage. System One Humidity Control technology analyzes ambient temperature and patient airflow to reach relative humidity at the mask. Choose from 5 levels of relative humidity.

System One is the first humidifier in the industry which accounts for room humidity. Sensors inside and outside the CPAP machine closely monitor changes in humidity and prevents condensation from forming inside the tube.

Dry Box technology is another breakthrough in reducing water damage to the CPAP. Several unique designs are incorporated into the humidifier to prevent water from exiting the chamber. To start, the air outlet port has been moved from the side of the humidifier onto the top. This centers the entire delivery; minimizing the total water displacement around the hole. The water chamber is outfitted with one-way valve, between the machine and the humidifier. Any water that manages to escape the chamber gets trapped within the Dry Box, which acts as a reservoir for any water ingress past the valve.

System One and Dry Box Technology make it possible for the PR CPAP machines to be truly spill-free. This humidifier, even with a chamber filled to the "Full" indicator line, can be tilted, shaken, and even turned upside down without water leaking back into the device.

System One Resistance Control

Respironics wanted a machine to achieve optimal pressure no matter which mask is used. Resistance Control is the solution, a numbering system on all of Respironics CPAP masks based on variable resistance characteristics. Each number instructs the device to compensate for different mask types. The result? A consistent and reliable pressure enhanced with all the benefits of Flex Technology no matter which mask is used.

Advanced Event Detection

The PR Auto CPAP is designed to identify symptoms beyond classic OSA parameters such AHI, flow limitation, Hypopnea, Obstructive and Central Apnea. With the PR system, detection is expand to include data on Snoring, Periodic Breathing and Respiratory Effort-Related Arousals (RERAs).

RERAs differ from a Hypopnea event in that a RERA shows increasing respiratory effort with each breath, culminating in a shift in brain wave activity and not necessarily a result of obstruction. Periodic breathing conditions such as Cheyne-Stokes respiration and central apneas are distinguishable from obstructed apnea or snoring events.

Flex Family Technology

Flex Technology is designed to enhance traditional CPAP therapy; maintaining effective therapy at minimal pressures. Users new to CPAP equipment find the Flex feature provides airflow at just the right pressure relief for every breath and makes adapting to CPAP therapy easier.

C-Flex offers a comfortable way to deliver sleep therapy by giving pressure relief at exhalation. Pressure is lowered based on a breath-per-breath analysis and provides up to 3 levels of relief based on the patient's expiratory flow.

C-FLex Plus is a new enhancement added to PR Pro and Auto CPAP machines. Similar to C-Flex, the technology provides pressure relief during exhalation based on expiratory flow. C-Flex+ minimizes the pressure transition and provides additional comfort when in fixed-CPAP mode. In addition, C-Flex+ softens the breathing cycle between inhalation to exhalation.

A-Flex is a comfort feature built on top of the REMstar Auto algorithm. If breathing events occur, the algorithm raises the A-Flex pressure profile to eliminate breathing events, while simultaneously making sure that pressure never rises to a level that's unnecessarily or uncomfortably high.

Encore Data Management and Reporting

On-board memory has been added to the CPAP as well as storing information on a generic SD Memory card and reads through any SD card reader. Use Encore Pro 2 Software to monitor therapy effectiveness through a series of reports. A new Patient Flow and Event report enables users to view a weekly breakdown on per-breath basis. Patient data is used to identify particular conditions and events with specific colors.

Power Options
Universal Power

The PR System One REMstar machines switch automatically, between 100 - 240v AC. When traveling either inside or outside the USA, there are no switches to switch or fuses to change. The machine will automatically sense what voltage is needed and set itself to run on the power needed.

The user will need to adapt the plug that goes into the wall to fit the style of outlet socket that is being used. This is simply done with a Power Adapter Plug kit. This is the same type of plug adapter that would be used with a hair dryer or an electric shaver.

World Traveler Power Adapter Plugs.

DC Power (Cigarette Lighter Adapter)

The PR System One REMstar machines come equipped with a DC plug on the back of the unit. This allows the user to connect the CPAP to an external DC battery source.

Using a Respironics, 12volt DC Power Cord the PR System One REMstar machines can be powered by plugging into a cigarette lighter plug. This is ideal for traveling by car, boat, or recreational vehicle that is equipped with a cigarette lighter plug.

Respironics, 12volt DC Battery Adapter Cable

DC Power (Marine Deep Cycle Battery)

It is recommended that you use a 100 amp hour, 12v DC deep cycle marine battery for operating you CPAP machine when not connected to 110v AC /230v AC.

There are two cables needed to configure the PR System One REMstar with a Marine Deep Cycle Battery. They fit together to make a connection from the back of the PR System One REMstar machines to the battery clip terminals on the marine battery.

Here are the links to the cables needed to hook up to a marine style battery. Both cables are needed.

Respironics, 12volt DC Power Cord (to connect CPAP to cigarette lighter socket)

Respironics, 12volt DC Battery Adapter Cable (to connect to battery terminals)

Respironics Battery Pack

The Respironics Battery Pack has been a long standing favorite of our customer’s. It weighs in at 13lbs and can be carried easily with its shoulder strap.

This battery pack will give roughly 26 hours of use, depending on the cpap pressure setting. (Results may vary.)

Respironics Battery Pack

* The Respironics Battery Pack must be charged with shore power. This unit can be charged at voltages ranging from 115v – 230v.

    Total Disappointment   December 31, 2009

(2 out of 5) by Henry M, CA

"I bought this unit to replace a Respironics Virtuoso LX that I'd been using successfully for 12 years, hoping the new technology would provide better sleep and be quieter. I was disappointed on both counts. Adding the humidifier made the unit much quieter and more comfortable yet I still was sleeping poorly. I was experiencing these short, intense, pulses of air pressure just as I was trying to fall asleep. No amount of adjustment of modes and settings corrected this. A CPAP.com support person suggested I try it in CPAP mode. This helped some but did not fix the situation totally and now I had a simple CPAP like I did 20 years ago.

Efforts to deal with this were stymied by lack of software. To add insult to this injury, the information display shows an average of 7-days minimum. There's no way to evaluate what happened the night before.

I struggled with this for a couple of months and gave up, replacing it with an Auto-CPAP from a different manufacturer and have been much happier."

so far so good   December 18, 2009

(5 out of 5) by joseph

"Have been using 1 week. First time for an auto CPAP and maybe its just my expectations but I feel like I am sleeping better and I am definitely waking up less. Pretty quiet although I hear my inhalation pretty well when first falling asleep but little machine noise. Only negative is the beep when turning the machine on or off than cannot be disabled. Its not a big problem unless you get up often and sleep with a light sleeper."

    Excellent but ...    December 05, 2009

(4 out of 5) by Paul

"missing end-user software + backlight on LCD Display to qualify for 5 stars.

I miss having the EncoreViewer software on my earlier M Series Auto. This is otherwise a great machine, quieter than the M Series. Companion Humidifier is a bit bulkier making the combination less convenient for travel.

All in all still an improvement over M Series. A-Flex appears to be causing fewer leaks so I feel more rested.

I ended up buying this combination as they would not ship the Resmed S8 Autoset II to Canada.

Very smooth purchase process. Thank you cpap.com !"

    A great machine - but.......   October 26, 2009

(3 out of 5) by Sham

"This machine works wonders for my therapy. Exhalation with A-Flex is comfortable even at high pressures in excess of 15 cms. The machine is able to track inhalation/exhalation accurately so breathing is almost as natural as without a CPAP.

Now the drawback - I hope Respironics watch this space - its a pity such a nice machine has such small niggling drawbacks. 1) There is no backlight for the LCD display, (the backlight is for the ramp button and the humidifier settings), didn't they think the user may want to see at what pressure the machine is operating when he gets up in the dark and doesn't want to disturb someone else sleeping in the same room by putting on the lights. 2) The data display should have the average of the last day alongwith the 7/30 days average 3) The machine beeps when it comes on, didn't they think this could disturb someone else sleeping in the room. 4) No software is still available.

I hope Respironics would address these issues - a great machine but they managed to have it given a mediocre review."

    October 14, 2009

(5 out of 5) by Carol A, Spring, TX

"This is a very nice machine. I had the M series A flex and liked it very much. But this is even better. It is very quiet and the lack of blue lights is quite nice. I also like that the humidifier works just as well without all the condensation in the mask and in the tubing. I think this is probably the best thing out there. Also, I really appreciated the good, quick service. My machine stopped working when I was in France on my way back to the U.S. I asked for an expedited shipping and it was waiting for me when I got home. I had a small issue with the set-up and a very helpful person walked me through re-setting the machine myself. I could not be happier with the equipment or with the service."
