Key Product Information
Manufacturer: Fisher & Paykel
The HC407 offers further advances to the Fisher & Paykel line of CPAP masks. It features the same "Fit and Forget" technology that combines a unique foam cushion shape and headgear design for a comfortable, stable fit.
The major differences between the HC405 and the HC407 are the new diffuser design and new Stretchgear headgear.
Here is a list of all the features and upgrades:
Out of Box Solution. All Fisher & Paykel masks come fully assembled and ready to wear so there is no fumbling or confusion.
FlexiFit Cushion. The unique inner foam cushion provides a secure seal. One standard size has been redesigned to mold to a variety of nose and bridge shapes.
Frosted Silicone Seal. A frosted texture helps the outer silicone cushion seal against the skin.
Glider Strap Anti-Leak System. This strap is used to connect the headgear to the mask frame for stability, but it slides across the frame when the head is turned so that the pressure of the seal stays uniform regardless of sleep position.
Bias Diffuser. The HC407 exhalation vent has be redesigned from one opening with a filter, to a series of several small holes that reduce noise and soften the release of the air. Filters are no longer needed.
Stretchgear Headgear. This new headgear design has an elastic section in the back that keeps the mask seal stable when moving the head up and down, as when moving from sleeping on the back to the side.

"I purchased a second mask because I was so pleased with my first one. I needed several replacement parts for it and it was more economical to purchase the complete mask. Works for me."

"I have facial hair and am unwilling to shave for a better mask seal, so I live with some leakage. I can't use the nasal pillow models because I get a horrible rash on my lip and nostrils from them. This mask does the best job I've found at giving a good seal over lip hair. I have an average size nose - if it was much bigger, this mask would be to small. But maybe if I had a bigger nose I could breathe better.
I like the foam insert design, it helps the mask retain it's shape when you move around. I do find that the thin silicon stretches out over time and after about a month I start to lose the seal. If I could afford it I'd replace the cushion every month, because it really works nicely when it's new and I always notice a difference with leaking. It's nice that it's replacable and you don't have to replace the whole mask+headgear, saves a lot of money.
The plastic part of the mask does eventually wear out over time, I was getting horrid whistling around the swivel piece after about a year and a half of use - especially in cold damp rooms. But that's not a bad length of use for a cpap mask in my 3 yrs experience.
And one really irritating design issue is the "comfort glide" design - the skinny strap across your cheeks that's suppsed to help the headgear move and adjust is just horrible, slicing into my cheeks and leaving ugly lines on my face that last about an hour or more, oftentimes I'm at work by the time they go away. I really wish the mfr would fix that. I've taken to stuffing a clean sock between the skinny garrot and my cheeks as padding.
The headgear is acceptable, it also wears out over time and I think the replacement cost is excessive for a couple strips of neoprene wetsuit material sewn together, with some velcro on the ends. If you replace the cushion and headgear at the same time, you could almost just replace the whole thing, you're only saving like $10."
