"The clips hold the mask securely in place. Sometimes it's difficult to get the straps clipped on properly. I would recommend, however, including an extra set of clips with the purchase of the mask, rather than having to purchase an extra set. It would be a very nice service, since they are made of plastic, and may be prone to breaking."
