The Transcend uses an LED light to signal if the filter needs to be replaced. The filter should be replaced every 100 hours or six months.
Once the filter is replaced, the LED filter clock must be reset. Depress and hold the power button until the LED light stops flashing, which indicates it has been reset for another 100 hours or six months.
Please note that the filter comes attached to the plastic base and does NOT detach.

"Rather than replacing a small patch of filter foam, the design of the Transcend II requires you to replace the whole bottom piece in order to replace the filter. They aren't that expensive, but would change them more often if it was just a foam patch. I'll likely squeeze as much life out of these as I can, which is probably not the best idea."
