Therapy Comfort: Auto-Adjusting and Pressure Relief

The RESmart Auto CPAP uses auto-adjusting technology to provide the best level of pressure for effective therapy. The machine adjusts the delivered air flow based on information gathered on a breath by breath basis. The pressure range is set in the Clinical Menu with MaxAPAP being the highest pressure and Treatment Pressure being the lowest pressure.

Sensitivity Setting, a feature unique to the RESmart Auto CPAP, allows the user to set the responsiveness level of the auto-adjusting algorithm. It offers settings 1 through 5 with 1 being a "soft" adjustment and 5 being a "hard" adjustment. "Soft" means that the adjustment will be applied over a longer period of time and "hard" means it will be applied more quickly. The machine is set to a default setting of 3 or mid-range Sensitivity Setting.

RESlex is a therapy comfort feature that reduces the air stream pressure during exhalation making it easier to breathe out against the flow. RESlex can be set to a level of 0, 1, 2, or 3 with 3 being the largest drop in pressure at exhalation. The default setting for RESlex is 0, or 'off. See the Important Tips tab for information on accessing the Patient Menu to set RESlex setting.

Therapy Data and iCode

iCode information maybe entered here: iCode Report Site.

Access advanced data remotely! The RESmart iCodes are displayed in the patient menu. View a sample of the RESmart iCode Report showing:

  • Days Count
  • Days of Therapy Greater Than 4 Hours
  • % of Days with Therapy Greater Than 4 Hours
  • Average Daily Compliance
  • Average Pressure for 95% of Treatment
  • Mean Pressure
  • AHI Apnea-Hypopnea Index
  • SNI Snore Index

The RESmart holds 365 days of information in the on board memory. When the data storage is full the oldest data drops off to make room for the new information. iCodes are available for:

  • 1 Day
  • 7 Days
  • 30 Days
  • 90 Days
  • 182 Days
  • 365 Days

View the RESmart iCode Quick Reference Sheet for more information on iCode functions.

Smart Phone Apps - iPhone & Android

Available for both iPhone and Android devices, the manufacturer of the RESmart Auto offers the free 3B/BMC iCode App. Search iTunes or GooglePlay to locate and download the application.

Available Alert and Auto Functions

In addition to auto-adjusting technology and Sensitivity Setting, RESmart offers a number of automatic features making it comfortable, reliable and easy to use. Auto Alert functions can be changed in the set up menu.

  • Auto On-Off starts the therapy session with breathing into the mask and turns off when breathing into the mask stops.
  • Auto Altitude Compensation adjusts between sea level and 8202 feet. If desired, the altitude can be manually set to 3 levels - see the Specs tab for details. Manually setting the altitude compensation may be helpful for users living at very high altitudes.
  • Power Off Alert sounds if the power to the device is interrupted during use.
  • Auto Leak Alert notifies the user of an open air circuit with an audible tone.

Heated Humidifier

The RESmart heated humidifier snaps onto the front of the device using the same power supply as the machine. Set the humidifier between 1 and 5 based on desired therapy humidification level. The RESmart chamber is designed to avoid flow of water back into the machine from the humidifier reducing the chance of water damage to the machine.

Review the Quick Reference Sheet RESmart Auto & CPAP for help with settings.

The RESmart iCode Quick Reference Sheet offers information on iCode functions and reports.

RESmart machines use a standard, 22mm hose and are not compatible with 15mm hoses.

RESlex Setting: The default setting for RESlex is turned off with a setting zero. RESlex is set in the Patient Menu. To access the Patient Menu:

  • With the machine turned off, press and hold the Ramp button.
  • The "Heater" setting will appear in the window.
  • Step through the settings by pushing the "+" button. RESlex is the seventh setting.
  • To change the RESlex setting, press the Ramp button one time, on the display screen a square next to the setting number will flash indicating it is active.
  • Pressing the "+" and "-" buttons select the desired level of RESlex. 0=Off; 1= the least drop in pressure at the time of exhalation; 3= the most drop in pressure at the time of exhalation.
  • Press the Ramp button once to set the RESlex setting.
  • Step through the remaining 6 menu items by pressing the "+" button until reaching the word "SAVE"
  • Press the Ramp button to LOCK IN any changes made. The screen will display will return to the ready mode.
  • NOTE - If the settings are not locked in with SAVE the changes will not be in place when using the machine.

DelayOff with Humidifier Usage: If a humidifier was used during the therapy session, the machine will continue blowing in a 'DelayOff' mode at a very low pressure to cool off the heating elements. This is normal operation for the RESmart line of machines. This feature can be changed in the Patient Menu as detailed above for RESlex. Look for the feature "DelayOff."

When "Enable" is selected, a machine with humidifier will run at a low pressure to cool and dry the machine. When "Disable" is selected, a machine with a humidifier will turn off when the therapy session is ended.

Range for auto-adjusting: The RESmart Auto machine refers the pressure range with the terms MaxAPAP (highest pressure) and Treatment Pressure (lowest pressure). Some manufacturers call these the Max and Min pressures. The machine will adjust to the optimum pressure between the two. When in auto-mode, the pressures displayed on the screen under the word "Ramp" and the ramp time are the starting "Ramp" pressure on the left and the Treatment, or minimum, pressure on the right.

Filter Change: Remove the filter cover by depressing the tab on the bottom of the cover and pulling up on the flare at the bottom of the cover. Insert the filter with the smooth, flat side facing INTO the machine. The textured side of the filter will be showing when installed correctly. Snap the filter cover back in place. Never install a wet filter.

Humidifier Chamber: The humidifier chamber is sealed and cannot be taken apart. It is recommended to fill and empty the chamber through the top port. Alternately, the silicone plug on top of the chamber can be removed to allow emptying. To replace the silicone plug, set the chamber on a hard, even surface, line up the tabs with the holes on the chamber and press firmly downward.

Use with In-Line Bacteria Filter: Please note that an in-line bacteria filter will fit snugly onto the RESmart heated humidifier, but will not make a proper connection to the machine without humidifier. A FlexiTube Angle Adapter for CPAP and BiPAP Machines can be used to connect the in-line bacteria filter to the machine without humidifier.

3B Products Manufacturer Warranty on the RESmart™ Auto CPAP Machine with RESlex with Heated Humidifier: The RESmart™ Auto CPAP Machine with RESlex with Heated Humidifier has a 2 Year Manufacturer Warranty.

Freedom Travel Battery

Weighing in at only 1.7 pounds, the Freedom Travel Battery is a great way to power the RESmart when travelling or on-the-go. It's light enough and portable enough to go almost anywhere, especially in off-the-grid situations. The Freedom Battery is also FAA certified, meaning it's cleared for use in-flight.

Currently, the only way to connect this machine to the Freedom Battery is by using a 150 Watt Sine Wave DC to AC Power Inverter (sold separately).

Deep Cycle Batteries

Alternatively, by using the inverter mentioned above, it is possible to connect to a Deep Cycle (car and boat) Battery with the 150 Watt Sine Wave Inverter mentioned above.

CPAP.com does not sell Deep Cycle Batteries. Deep Cycle Batteries are available locally at auto parts stores.

How can I compare different machines?
We work very hard to provide many different ways for our customers to compare products. Here are the machine product guides we have created and maintain:
  • CPAP Machine Comparison Guide. This guide stacks up every CPAP machine we sell, feature by feature. If you don't know the meaning of a feature, click the question mark for a definition. The links below will take you to the most popular CPAPs, or all CPAP machines we sell.

How do I choose the machine that is right for me?
We provide our customers with many tools to make informed decisions about their machine purchases. Options include:
What comes with my machine?
Machines come with a six foot hose, power cord, at least one filter, and manuals. Most manufacturers include a carrying case which is designed specifically for their equipment. CPAP, APAP, and BiPAP machines do not come with a delivery system or mask. CPAP masks must be purchased separately.

To see the list of what specifically comes with each machine, you can Browse for a machine. Then on the product page, click the "Specs" tab to see a full list of what comes with the machine.

What type of power does my CPAP need?
Most CPAP, APAP and BiLevel machines today are designed to operate on both AC and DC voltage. In the United States, the AC current from a wall outlet is 110 volts. Overseas, the AC current is usually 220 or 240 volt. Most batteries produce 12 volt DC current.

We include information about the power needs and capacities on the CPAP.com pages our products. Please see the "POWER" tab on any machine product page for this information. You can also see a summary of the voltage range and whether it is DC capable on our Compare Charts.

Here is a video explaining differences in power cords and power supplies of various CPAP machines:

What maintenance is required on machines?
The only care a CPAP, APAP or BiPAP machine requires is to clean or change the filters at the air intake. This keeps the internal parts from accumulating dust. Fine paper filters should be changed out every 30 days, or when they appear soiled. Foam washable filters should be rinsed with clear running water once a week, allowed to air dry, and reinserted.

Here are some other suggested actions to care for your machine:
  • Keep the area around your machine clean by removing any dust from the area to improve the air quality delivered to your machine and to you.
  • Keep the air intake of the machine unblocked. Curtains, bedding, and papers can easily block the air intake of your machine, reducing the airflow.
  • If a humidifier is used with your therapy, do not pick up the machine with the humidifier attached. With most machines it is easy to spill water from the humidifier chamber into the machine causing damage. Manufacturer warranties are voided by water damage to the machine. To avoid this, remove the chamber from the humidifier and then remove the humidifier from the machine rather than transporting them together.
  • If a humidifier is used, empty the water from the chamber every morning. Accidents happen. If a family pet or family member moves the machine and humidifier with water in the chamber it is more likely that water could be spilled into your machine. Water damage to a machine voids the manufacturer warranty.
Are prescriptions required for mask, machine, humidifier, and EPAP purchases?

Yes. Federal law requires we have a valid prescription on file before we ship your mask, machine, humidifier, or EPAP therapy, including Provent and Bongo RX. You will also need a prescription to purchase the Nightbalance POSA device.

We provide many easy ways to get your prescription:

  • We can request your prescription for you! When you checkout, just let us know you would like us to request your prescription, or you can log into your account to have us request your prescription.
  • Fax your prescription to our toll-free fax number: 866.353.2727, or our international fax number: 713.541.7377
  • Email your prescription to cpap@cpap.com
  • Upload your prescription in your account, under the Prescriptions Section
  • Ask your doctor to fill out our prescription form. We have both a standard prescription form and an EPAP prescription form.

For more information on prescriptions, please see our Prescription Section of the Learning Center.

Which CPAP masks work on which machines?

Any mask will work with any machine, with one important exception. The ResMed AirMini is only compatible with certain ResMed CPAP masks. Compatible masks for the AirMini are as follows:

  • ResMed AirFit™ N20 Nasal Mask
  • ResMed AirFit™ F20 Full Face
  • ResMed AirTouch™ F20 Full Face
  • ResMed AirFit™ P10 Nasal Pillow

When considering another CPAP, APAP or BiPAP machine from ResMed or any other manufacturer, mask compatibility extends to all brands. The AirMini uses non-standard tubing to connect the machine to the mask, and is the primary reason why other masks won't work with the AirMini. Despite this issue, many of our customers consider the AirMini to be an excellent machine.

What are the CPAP, BiPAP, Sleep Apnea, and Oxygen related HCPCS, CPT or billing codes?

E1399 is Miscellaneous and is used for other CPAP and Oxygen items.
Do all CPAPs use filters?
Yes, all CPAPs use at least one filter that is usually a type of foam material and washable. Some CPAPs offer finer filtration with the addition of a disposable paper filter.

Cleaning and changing filters is the only maintenance required for a CPAP machine.

The filters are located at the back of the machine at the air intake.
How often should I clean my filters?
Washable foam filters should be cleaned as soon as they become discolored. Manufacturers recommend foam filters be rinsed weekly under clear running water and allowed to air dry before being reinstalled in the machine. If the machine is used in a very dusty environment, the foam filter may require more frequent cleaning.

Disposable filters and bacteria filters are not intended to be cleaned but rather changed out, disposing of the used filter. Manufacturers recommend changing the disposable filter once a month, more frequently if used in a very dusty environment.

Love this machine. It is super quiet and it breathes nicely with me. I like the auto turn on and off. I did get a laugh because it was bigger than expected but not a big issue at all.
