Fitting Help

SoftGel and ActiveCell Technology are designed to seal without needing to over-tighten the mask headgear to create a secure seal. A looser fitting mask reduces pressure points and prevents red marks.

ResMed also provides a printable sizing tool that has cut-outs with sizes for the Mirage Micro, SoftGel and Activa LT Sizing Template.

Where do I find the size?

The Mirage SoftGel� Nasal CPAP Mask frame has two different sizes: Small and Standard. Only the small size is labeled and will accept only small size cushions. When examining the front of the mask, the size is printed on either side of the elbow, where the headgear clips attach. The Standard mask frame is not labeled and will work only with cushion sizes: Medium, Large, and Large Wide. The Mirage SoftGel� cushion is replaceable and comes labeled. When examining the front of the mask, the size is printed on the top, bottom and right left side of the cushion.

Sizing Recommendations if you are changing from a Philips Respironic's ComfortGel mask

If you are currently using a ComfortGel and are trying the SoftGel, we recommend the following sizing recommendations:

ComfortGel - Petite = SoftGel - Small
ComfortGel - Small = most will fit the SoftGel - Medium, some may find the SoftGel - Small a better fit
ComfortGel - Medium = SoftGel - Large
ComfortGel - Large = SoftGel - Large Wide

Convertable Use with Activa LT

The ConvertAble Series is a new ResMed concept that allows cushions to interchange with other masks. The SoftGel frame and Activa LT frames are identical in size. There are two frame sizes between these two masks. The size small is the only system that cannot change mask sizes. We recommend the following conversion equivalent chart.

Finally the right mask for me!

"After trying five different masks, the SoftGel is finally the solution I've been looking for. I started with the Swift FX (comfortable but couldn't adjust it to stay put all night), then went to the Mirage Micro (stable but left welts in the side of my nose), the the Swift LT (better than the FX but still not secure enough), then the ComfortGel (not bad but just didn't fit well--too big overall, awkward headgear, uncomfortable forehead piece) and now, the SoftGel. I feel like Goldilocks and this one is JUST RIGHT! It's very comfortable, stable and quiet. The gel cushion feels good on my face and doesn't leave marks. My leak data is great and it stays in place no matter what position I sleep in (I am a side sleeper primarily and roll over a lot during the night). It's also super quiet, which is great. The nasal pillow masks have the Darth Vader effect every time you breathe that gets tedious after a while. I frequently have to put my hand in front of vent to be sure the machine is still on. The diffused vent holes are nice--I don't have a rush of air coming out of the mask blowing onto my arms like you get with the Swift FX. The quick release tabs are very convenient and easy to get on and off, unlike the ball and socket connections on the ComfortGel which I couldn't ever seem to figure out how to disconnect in the dark. All in all a great mask and I'm very happy with it."

"There are some parts of this mask that are very pleasing. It fits my face better than any mask I have tried before with very little leakage. Also the head gear is a solid design and I have very little slippage. My problems with this mask are two. There seems to be something rough just below the nose and I find it rubbing my nose a bit. Also, it does not seems like enough air is getting though compared to my prior mask, so I may have to have another test and adjust my level again."

Are the Mirage SoftGel and Activa LT nasal cushion sizes interchangeable on the mask frame?

How do I care for my mask?

Masks should be washed daily with warm water using a very gentle soap or baby shampoo, and left to air dry. Never use antibacterial soap as it will break down the silicone of the mask cushion. Avoid soaps that include lotion which can coat the mask and cause it to lose its seal. A safe cleaner is the Control III Disinfectant CPAP Cleaning Solution. Remember, going to bed with a clean face will improve your seal and protect the lifespan of your mask.
The best time to clean your mask is in the morning after use. This removes the oils left behind from your skin which can reduce the lifespan of your mask. We recommend using mask wipes to make daily morning cleaning easy. The mask wipes are made from materials that will not break down your mask.

Which CPAP masks work on which machines?

All CPAP masks work with all machines.

Why might I prefer a nasal mask?

The ideal CPAP mask is the one you can't tell is on. Start with minimal masks. If you are strictly a nose breather, the nasal mask is a good choice. The nasal cushion creates a very good seal around your nose and has a small profile. Nasal masks are also offered in gel, which many find comfortable. The SleepWeaver Advance is the only cloth mask on the market and is a very popular choice among nasal mask users.

Most nasal masks have a forehead support which offers stability and support for the mask.

How often should I replace my mask?

Medicare allows for mask cushion replacement every three (3) months, and a complete mask system replacement every six (6) months. CPAP manufacturers and vendors suggest these replacement schedules as well.

In our experience, most mask cushions begin to deteriorate after about six months of use. The cushion eventually becomes too soft to hold a seal. The headgear straps lose elasticity and must be tightened more and more to get the same quality seal.

We strongly suggest replacing cushions and pillows as soon as they start to soften. Air leaks may reduce the effectiveness of CPAP therapy and headgear that is too tight may cause facial sores at pressure points. In most cases, replacement headgear is available if it is stretched out or the Velcro worn out.
