The Best Travel CPAP Machines of 2023

At CPAP.com, we diligently maintain a thorough process to guarantee accurate information about CPAP equipment. Our expert team employs rigorous research techniques, analyzing relevant scientific publications, medical studies, and industry reports. To further ensure reliability, our content undergoes review by sleep medicine specialists and or CPAP experts. Our core commitment is to provide our readers with the most accurate, up-to-date, and science-backed information related to sleep health solutions and CPAP equipment.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP machines) are the gold standard for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Standard CPAP machines are ideal for at-home sleep apnea treatment, but if you’re planning a trip or travel frequently, you may want to consider adding a travel CPAP machine to your setup to maintain your therapy success while on the go.

If you have the travel bug and you’re in need of a capable, portable CPAP machine, there are a handful of excellent options on the market to help you achieve the same restful sleep you’ve come to expect at home. Travel CPAP machines have many of the same comfort features as full-sized machines, such as auto start and stop functions, ramp, and pressure relief settings.

Many of today’s travel CPAP machines even offer humidification to keep your therapy air moist and help prevent dry mouthnose, and throat wherever your travels take you! Traditional bedside units still make for the quietest CPAP machines, but portable options are typically only a couple of decibels louder, allowing you to enjoy whisper-quiet therapy no matter where you are.

With many dreamy options and features to consider, we understand that finding the perfect travel CPAP for you can be overwhelming, which is exactly why we’re tapping into over two decades of product knowledge and expertise to bring you this guide to the best travel CPAP machines.

Key Features of a Travel CPAP Machine

In comparison to standard machines, travel-friendly CPAP machines are small, lightweight, and portable. If it’s your first time traveling with a CPAP machine, it’s important to note that travel machines are TSA-friendly, and most units are FAA-approved for in-flight use. If your flight is short, a small CPAP machine makes disassembly, packing, and reassembly a breeze!

If your travel machine has the waterless humidification feature, you will also need to pack your machine’s accompanying heat moisture exchange (HME) cartridge, which allows you to leave the distilled water at home. Tiny but mighty, the HME cartridges trap the humidity from your exhaled breath and recirculate it back for your inhaled breath.

It’s also important to understand how a mini CPAP machine is different from a standard machine. A portable CPAP device has some added benefits that will ease some of the stress while traveling.

A good travel CPAP machine:

  • Can Plug Into a Cigarette Lighter to Draw Power From Your Car’s Battery
  • Can Be Used With a DC Cable Converter to Allow You to Easily Sleep On-the-Go
  • Has Options for Extending the Battery Life—Perfect for Long Flights or Camping Trips
  • Is Small, Lightweight, and FAA-Compliant—Safe for Use on a Plane
  • Can Still Deliver Quality Therapy Despite Its Small Size

Now that you know some of the standard features of a travel CPAP machine, it’s time to find the right one for you!

Wow, this little machine is awesome — 5 Stars: “As a former owner of a Dreamstation Go, which was recalled, I needed a replacement. Not only is it smaller, it is quieter and it is so simple to operate. Using for both travel and home. So far it’s working great. Just put the mask on, go to sleep and take it off in the morning. The Mini automatically starts and stops, quickly. And in Auto mode it automatically ramps the pressure.” Verified Purchase 08/06/2023

Why We Chose This Machine

  • Compact and Convenient Design: The AirMini is a game-changer for travelers seeking a CPAP machine that’s easy to pack and carry. Its palm-sized dimensions make it incredibly convenient, and the HumidX system eliminates the need for a separate humidifier, saving you even more space in your luggage.
  • Advanced Features for On-the-Go Therapy: The AirMini is not just compact; it’s also smart. With Bluetooth connectivity, you can track important metrics like leak rate, usage hours, and events per hour directly on your smartphone via the AirMini companion app. This ensures you maintain effective therapy, even while you’re away from home.
  • Versatility and Compatibility: Initially, the AirMini was compatible with only a few specific ResMed masks. However, the introduction of the Zephair AirMini Universal Adapter has expanded your options, allowing you to use any standard hose and mask with the device. This gives you the freedom to choose the best setup for your needs.
  • Sound and Noise Considerations: While some users have noted that the AirMini is not as quiet as some full-sized machines, its noise level is comparable to white noise. If you usually travel with a sound machine, the AirMini’s noise level might allow you to leave that extra device at home.

This Machine is Ideal For:

  • Frequent Flyers: The AirMini is perfect for those who are always on the move. Its compact size and advanced features make it an ideal choice for frequent travelers who don’t want to compromise on their CPAP therapy.
  • Tech Lovers: If you like to keep track of your therapy data, the AirMini’s Bluetooth connectivity and app features will be a big plus for you. Monitor your therapy effectiveness easily through your smartphone.
  • Those Who Value Convenience: With its space-saving design and waterless humidification system, the AirMini is perfect for anyone looking to simplify their travel packing without sacrificing comfort or effectiveness.
  • Users in Varied Climates: The availability of HumidX Plus cartridges makes the AirMini adaptable for use in more arid climates and higher elevations, ensuring you get the right level of humidification wherever you go.

By offering a blend of convenience, advanced features, and versatility, the ResMed AirMini sets the standard for travel CPAP machines. It’s an excellent choice for anyone who values effective therapy on the go, despite a slightly higher price point.

Why We Chose This Machine

  • Unmatched Portability: The Transcend Micro Auto is a marvel of compact size. Its incredibly small size and lightweight design make it the ultimate travel companion, easily fitting into any travel bag.
  • Comprehensive Features: Don’t let its size fool you; this machine comes with all the features you’d expect from a larger unit. Automatic pressure adjustments, ramp technology, and an adjustable pressure relief setting ensure you get a comfortable and effective therapy experience.
  • Innovative Additions: What sets this machine apart is its unique features, like the drying mode, which is perfect for off-the-grid adventures where you can’t air-dry your equipment. It also comes with built-in sound and vibration-dampening technology and a WhisperSoft Muffler to reduce noise.
  • Versatility and Compatibility: Perhaps, most importantly, the Transcend Micro is compatible with virtually any CPAP mask, except for masks that are specifically designed for other machines, such as the AirMini-only masks like the AirFit N30 for AirMini or the AirFit P10 for AirMini. The upcoming Reusable PureFresh Air Filters are designed to last around six months, adding to the machine’s convenience.

This Machine is Ideal For:

  • Adventure Seekers: If you love camping or traveling off-the-grid, the Transcend Micro’s drying mode is a game-changer, helping to prevent mold and bacteria build-up in your equipment.
  • Those Who Value Quietness: Thanks to its WhisperSoft Muffler and sound dampening technology, this machine offers a quiet operation, allowing you a peaceful night’s sleep wherever you are.
  • Users Looking for Low Maintenance: With its reusable air filters that last up to six months and waterless humidification, the Transcend Micro Auto is perfect for those who want a low-maintenance machine.
  • Compatibility Seekers: If you already have a favorite CPAP mask, chances are it will be compatible with the Transcend Micro, giving you the freedom to use the equipment you’re most comfortable with.

While the Transcend Micro Auto does have some limitations, such as the lack of support for a full humidifier and some initial app issues, its benefits far outweigh these minor drawbacks. It’s a robust and versatile addition to the travel CPAP market, and we believe it will stand the test of time. Keep an eye out for updates on the availability of Transcend HMEs for waterless humidification and replacement air filters.

Consider the Following Before Purchasing a Travel CPAP:

When it comes to finding your ideal travel machine, we think it’s important that you are armed with the knowledge to make the best purchasing decision for your specific sleep apnea therapy needs. For this reason, we’ve created a handy buying guide of things to consider when shopping for a travel-sized CPAP machine.

Portability

The very first thing you should consider is what situations you’ll most commonly be using your new CPAP machine in. Frequent and infrequent travelers have different needs; some people may want a dedicated travel machine while others may simply prefer a bedside unit that happens to be easy to travel with.

Most dedicated travel CPAP machines are FAA-approved for in-flight use, but more traditional units may not be. Someone who does more camping than flying may prefer a more barebones unit that’s simple to operate when off-the-grid over a machine with more bells and whistles.

Price

In terms of pricing, travel CPAP machines are typically more affordable than their full-sized counterparts—though you can still expect to spend around $600 to $900 for a compact machine from a reputable brand. Many of these travel machines pack in as much value as they can, and in comparison to your bedside unit (especially if both machines are from the same manufacturer), most travel machines will feature the same or similar comfort features. They will also commonly include a travel case or pouch as well as any power accessories you’ll need to get it running. Most travel machines will also let you use the same mask as your home machine, saving you some money on an additional mask or tubing.

Doctor’s Recommendations

Since you can’t buy a CPAP machine without a prescription, you may have already talked with your healthcare provider about the best equipment for your needs. Whether there are specific machine settings or comfort features you require or there’s a particular mask style that works best for you, be sure that the machine you’re considering will be able to deliver the therapy you deserve.

Sound Level

CPAP technology has come a long way in reducing the sound level of portable CPAP machines, and most modern devices are only slightly noisier than their full-sized counterparts. Some machines, like the HDM Z2 and Transcend Micro, even include tube mufflers for a more whisper-quiet experience. Some owners report that their travel machines, while quiet, do operate at a higher pitch than their home machine, but most people find themselves easily drifting to sleep with a brief adjustment period or a good pair of earplugs. If you prefer to sleep with a bit of sound anyway, you might find that your travel CPAP machine doubles as a dreamy white noise machine, too!

Machine Type

If you’ve been using CPAP therapy at home on a different device, there’s a good chance that your travel CPAP machine will give you a different experience. Due to size constraints and engineering hurdles, a pressure setting on your bedside unit may not behave the same way on a travel machine. Even if both are set to 12 cm H2O, the experience still may be different.

For this reason, we recommend traveling with an APAP machine. It’s much easier to let the machine react to your needs rather than relying on a set pressure that may not be enough for you at the moment or feels weaker from your travel machine.

Comfort Features (Ramp, AutoStart, Pressure Relief, etc.)

Outside of doctor’s recommendations, you may personally prefer or even require specific comfort settings such as ramp or auto start/stop. Be sure that the machine you’re considering has the features that are most important to you for a restful sleep apnea therapy experience.

This also applies to humidifier usage; if you’re someone who requires a standard humidifier or if you’re traveling to a drier climate where you might need one, your options will decrease. However, if you’re content with utilizing waterless humidification, you can save yourself from having to pack distilled water and travel lighter in the process.

Data Tracking

If data tracking is essential to you, you might consider a more high-tech option with real-time reporting to the machine’s compatible cellphone app. Keep in mind that some travel machines can’t sync or view data until you’re back home with your PC.

Accessories

Accessories for a travel CPAP device include things like external batteries for charging or operating your machine, a travel case or carrying bag to protect your equipment, tubing or mask adapters (such as the Zephair Universal AirMini Adapter), or waterless humidification devices (heat moisture exchange units). When you decide on your travel machine budget, be sure to factor in the cost of any additional travel accessories you’d like as well.

Warranty

Most travel machines have a two-year warranty, though there are some longer and shorter exceptions. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s warranty for your device to be clear on whether or not it protects you in situations you may find yourself in while traveling.

FAA Approval

As we mentioned earlier, most travel CPAP machines are FAA-approved and TSA-friendly, though it never hurts to double-check with the manufacturer’s specifications. Some airlines will also have different rules/requirements than others, so be sure to inquire about any policies they may have regarding CPAP machine use in flight.

Power Consumption/Requirements

Most machines can run off of outlets in almost any country with the appropriate travel plug adapter. Still, it’s always a good idea to be familiar with where you’re traveling and the power draw of your machine. For camping and off-the-grid activities like RV travel, it’s also important to know if you’ll need to add any adapters or inverters to your CPAP setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Do Travel CPAP Machines Cost?

Cheaper travel CPAP machines start in the neighborhood of $600 and can be as expensive as $1,200. On average, you’ll spend about $800 for a quality travel machine.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of a Travel CPAP Machine?

While it’s always encouraged to check these specifics with your insurance company, many will not cover the cost of a travel CPAP.

Can I Use a Regular Mask With My Travel CPAP?

In most cases, yes! Most travel machines will include a hose or mask adapter or be universally compatible. We also offer additional adapters to work around some machine restrictions.

Can I Use a Travel CPAP at Home?

Yes! A travel CPAP machine is perfectly capable of delivering quality therapy as a full-time home unit. It is worth noting, however, that parts in your travel machine may wear more or show their age more quickly than on a larger unit. You should also consider how important a suite of comfort features is to you, as travel machines may not have the same capabilities in that regard.

Can I Use a Travel CPAP In-Flight?

Yes! If a device is FAA-approved, then you can use it during the flight as long as you meet the requirements of your airliner. Examples of some requirements would be requiring a 48-hour approval notice before the flight or requiring a separate CPAP battery with a capacity equal to or greater than 150% of the expected flight time. Check with your airline for more details.

Final Thoughts

Wherever and however you’ll be traveling, there is a compact CPAP machine suitable for your trip! Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice a good night’s sleep without proper sleep apnea therapy on your next adventure.

Remember: The best travel CPAP machine is the one that will give you a therapy experience that’s closest to what you’re used to getting at home. Traveling can disrupt the usual cadence and rhythm of our lives, initiating a stress response in the body. By finding a semi-familiar product that will help you maintain your CPAP routine on the go, you’ll be setting yourself up for a healthier and happier trip overall.

Safe travels!

  1. Thank you for providing the information and will be useful in determining my purchase. What is missing however are the negatives features of each type. I believe the level of noise and whether the hoses/mask accommodate all types or are proprietary are important to mention. Thank you very much

    1. We’re coming out with a series of posts soon that will address some of these concerns. Thanks for the feedback! We actually recently published a post on the quietest masks, if you navigate to our blog homepage you should see it.

  2. I have used the Z1 with the newer extended battery pack for camping and have been able to get 3 nights in warmer fall weather or 2 nights in colder weather with it. I keep the CPAP in my sleeping bag to keep it warm and the air that I am inhaling. The short hose is also helpful for keeping the overall weight and size down in my backpack.

    1. Hi Gail, most CPAP machines have the auto-adjust according to altitude feature built into the machine. In order for us to know for certain, if your machine has this feature, we would need to know which machine you have.

Please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you can e-mail us at: cpap@cpap.com.

      Have a great day!

  3. I have the transcend machine and I think it works well for my traveling, which has taken us around the world in the last several years.

  4. I have a Transcend mi ni and I feel like Darth Vader when I use it. It seems so loud, I don’t. Any suggestions?

  5. is the air mini usable on safari trips in AFRICA? do they work on cruise ships also?
I am considering purchasing the air mini for travel and not sure about its working capabilities outside the USA.
are their precaution needed for safety of the equipment?

    1. Hi Ann, yes. The AirMini, will work in Africa and on cruise ships. Please keep in mind that you will need a power adapter for the power outlet of the country you will be traveling to. Please see the link below to get a better idea as to what I’m referring to.

      https://www.cpap.com/productpage/World-Traveler-Power-Adapter-Plugs-CPAP

Also, if you will be without power during your trip, you may consider adding a battery with your machine. Please see the link to view a battery that will work with the AirMini.

      https://www.cpap.com/productpage/medistrom-pilot-24-lite-battery

Finally, keep in mind that you may have Bluetooth connectivity issues depending on the internet availability in the locations you’ll be traveling to. This will not interfere with your ability to use your machine, but your therapy data may not be available until you have access to internet connection.

For further questions, or concerns, we can be reached at: 1-800-356-5221.

      I wish you safe travels!

  6. Hello- Is there a machine on the market that is good for everyday use as well as compact enough for occasional travel? I know the travel only machines are super compact, but I’m really looking for something smaller then my Resmed 10 home machine so I can travel easier with it. Any suggestions?

  7. What would prevent a CPAP user from purchasing a travel CPAP and using it at home and travel? What are the limitations, pros & cons?

    1. Hey Deb, the functionality, of the home and travel machine are the same. They both blow the same amount of air according to the pressure settings. The main differences between a home and travel machines are the size. Most of the travel machines are smaller than the regular machines, but keep in mind that for the most part the travel machines will be a bit noisier than the regular home machines.

Also, most of the travel machines have an option for waterless humidification, but not a standard humidifier. There are a few travel machines, that have an option to add a humidifier, but they will add size to the unit, in some cases, making the travel machine almost the same size as the home unit.

If you travel a lot, and are looking for a smaller machine and don’t require a standard humidifier, the travel machine would be a great option for you.

If you wish to speak with us further regarding machine options, or anything else, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221.

      Have a great day!

  8. Going to Africa and will be in the bush for several nights without power.
How many nights does the multi night battery last?
How can you re-charge the multi night battery? Cigarette lighter/DC? Solar?

    1. Hi Lisa,
The manufacturer tested this battery with the several Transcend series machines and found it could generate approximately 14 hours of run time on a pressure setting of 14. Certain factors like altitude, pressure setting, temperature, machine type, and if you use humidification can all factor into run times. Individual results may vary.

The battery is charged using the Transcend Travel machine’s power supply. The power supply is plugged into a wall outlet and into the battery.

There is an option for DC charge by using the Transcend DC Mobile Power Adapter Second Gen and Solar is an option also with the Solar Charger for Transcend Batteries.

For further questions, or concerns, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: cpap@cpap.com.

Have a wonderful and safe trip to Africa!
