Does My CPAP Machine Come With A Warranty?

CPAP equipment warranties vary by manufacturer, machine, and mask. Since a product warranty is often a factor in the buying decision consumers make, it’s a good idea to learn some of the warranty information on some of the top CPAP machine brands. This will keep you from having to inquire about a CPAP machine warranty through email, on the phone or in the dealer’s office.

As you’ll notice, not all CPAP machines come with the same warranty. Most CPAP machines come with a two-year warranty. Some come with a three-year warranty and some even as long as a five-year warranty.

There is also what’s known as a “convenient” warranty and an “inconvenient” warranty.

  • Convenient warranty: With a convenient warranty, the dealer replaces the defective product immediately with a new product of the same before the manufacturer inspects the defective product.
  • Inconvenient warranty: With an inconvenient warranty, the consumer needs to send the defective product back for inspection or repair before it’s replaced.

Examples of Warranties By CPAP Machine Manufacturer

Warranties vary by machine and manufacturer. Here is a sampling of some different warranties for different CPAP machines manufacturers. Note, that a manufacturer may change its warranty terms and conditions in the future.

DeVilbiss Machine Warranty

The DeVilbiss IntelliPAP CPAP machine series, including the IntelliPAP AutoAdjust, IntelliPAP Standard Plus and IntelliPAP BiLevel S all come with three-year warranties. This three-year warranty by DeVilbiss used to come as an inconvenient warranty, but DeVilbiss decided in 2011 to change its warranty so it’s more convenient for CPAP users. DeVilbiss also offers a five-year warranty on other CPAP machines.

ResMed Warranty

ResMed warrants your product will be free from material defects and defects in workmanship from the date you buy them for a period of two years (for CPAP machines).

Apex Medical Warranty

Apex Medical manufacturer offers a two-year manufacturer warranty on their compact high-quality CPAP machines.

Human Design Medical Warranty

With Human Design Medical, The seller’s warranty is conditioned upon the product being delivered and handled with the proper care and that they’re stored and used in accordance with the instruction of the seller for the product.

The product has been subject to routine service and maintenance, repair and replacement have been performed based on the instructions of the seller and the product is returned in the packaging provided by the seller if a return to the seller is necessary. For CPAP machines, the warranty is 36 months from the original date of shipment.

Philips Respironics, Inc. Warranty

Philips Respironics, Inc warrants their products will be free of defects to materials and workmanship and will perform as per the specifications of the product for a two-year period from the date of sale. If the product doesn’t perform in accordance to the specifications of the product, Respironics, Inc will replace or repair the defective part or material at its option, while also paying customary freight charges to the dealer location. This warranty doesn’t cover any damage caused by:

  • Misuse
  • Accident
  • Water ingress
  • Alteration
  • Abuse
  • Other defects not related to workmanship or material

In rare cases, a manufacturer won’t cover a defect under warranty reported because they determine the defect is caused by abuse or misuse of the machine. For instance, if you drop your machine and the screen cracks and no longer works, the manufacturer will probably not cover this defect under warranty once inspecting the CPAP device.

Most manufacturers don’t make exceptions on warranty timelines. For instance, if your CPAP machine has a two-year warranty, and your CPAP machine broke in its 26th month of use, your warranty likely won’t be accepted since it’s after the stated warranty period. Similarly, if your CPAP mask, which has a three-month warranty, breaks on its 97th day of use, again, you’re lucky out-of-luck for the warranty to be accepted.

In most cases, warranties on CPAP equipment are not transferable. What that means is the warranty applies to the original consumer, and not if the consumer resold the device to another individual. Keep in mind also, that most warranties do not cover damage caused as a result of abuse, alteration, modification or improper use of the product.

Examples of Warranties By CPAP Machine

Here are some examples of different CPAP machines and their warranties:

  1. ResMed AirSense 10: Two-year machine warranty
  2. ResMed AirSense 11: Two-year machine warranty
  3. Human Design Medical Z1 Travel CPAP Machine: Three-year machine warranty
  4. Philips Respironics DreamStation CPAP Machine: Two-years limited warranty
  5. DeVilbiss IntelliPAP Standard CPAP Machine: Five-year warranty
  6. Somnetics Transcend EZEX miniCPAP™ Machine: Three-year warranty

Manufacturer warranties actually begin on the day you buy the CPAP machine from the manufacturer. The manufacturer will typically allow an up to six-month “shelf life” to account for the possibility of the machine sitting on the dealer’s shelf for some time before it’s been sold. This typically doesn’t impact the consumer.

Note that CPAP.com accepts returns on items you buy from us that have manufacturing defects. CPAP.com will contact and work with the manufacturer on your behalf to have the item replaced or fixed with a like item or exact item under the warranty policy. Please also note that any shipping cost associated to return merchandise to CPAP.com is not covered in any warranty situation.

About CPAP Mask Warranties

Just like CPAP machines have warranties, so do CPAP masks. CPAP mask users are often happily surprised to find out their broken CPAP mask comes with a warranty. The warranty services provided may vary depending on if you purchased your CPAP mask from CPAP.com or from another dealer or manufacturer. Most warranties for CPAP masks are three months.

CPAP.com offers warranty services for all items purchased through CPAP.com. Therefore, if you happen to purchase a defective mask from CPAP.com, you generally don’t need to send the mask back or wait for a repair. The mask is replaced for only the cost of shipping if it was bought through CPAP.com and was broke (not due to your fault) within the warranty period.

You can also note that CPAP.com accepts returns on any unopened product within one month (i.e. 30 days) of the original shipment date. There is a nominal return processing fee and shipping isn’t reimbursed.

On the other hand, if you purchase a CPAP device from a dealer who doesn’t sell many CPAP devices, it’s possible the device you purchase could have been sitting on the shelf for some time in the dealer’s warehouse. If this is the case, you could be purchasing a device with a shorter warranty than what you expected.

If you experience any problems with your CPAP machine or equipment, you’ll have to call the dealer. Once you contact the dealer, they’ll get a hold of the manufacturer to verify the warranty, see if you’re covered and obtain a return authorization number.

What Happens After the CPAP Warranty Expires

When your CPAP device isn’t covered by the warranty any longer, you’ll need to make a decision if you want your machine repaired or if it’s time for a new machine. You have to weigh the repair costs with the cost of a new machine to determine what is the right avenue for you. Either way, in most cases, most manufacturers try to make their warranty process and straightforward and simple as they can to help make it as simple as possible for the consumer.

  1. An issue that is likely not explicitly covered by warranty is the machine’s noise level. However.I have gotten and returned for better, machines that were rated as “the lowest” in sound level, or nearly so, that were louder than previous machines that had higher noise ratings. Machines that were so loud my spouse, on the other side of the bed had trouble getting to sleep. Machines that were loud enough that they had to be placed on the floor, under the bed, rather -than on the night stand where previous machines had been placed. Obviously there is a need for an industry standard. Seek to get a try- it-before-you–buy-it arrangement or agreement with your DME provider.

    1. Hey Dennis, I agree. It is always a great idea to speak with your medical supply company to confirm if there is any type of product guarantee period. Sound level to one person, may be totally unacceptable to someone else.

      I have seen machines with a lower DBA (sound level) than other machines, but is actually louder also. Please keep in mind that not all companies will have an option to try a machine and then return it if you are not satisfied.

  2. Does Philips have an International warranty. Eg. if purchased in Australia will Philips India cover any defect in India ?

      I have contacted Philips Respironics and confirmed that any device/machine purchased new comes with a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.

      Basically, if you purchase a device in Australia, the warranty will go with the machine to India. I’m unable to confirm the details of the warranty, such as if you’ll have to ship the device back to Australia for the warranty coverage, but before purchasing the device from Australia, the seller should be able to accurately, answer your warranty questions.
