How can I get a 100 on my ResMed MyAir score?

There are 4 key factors that are taken into consideration when calculating your ResMed MyAir score – Usage Hours, Mask Seal, Mask On and Off, and Events Per Hour, or AHI. Each key factor has its own respective point system. Let’s break down what each of these mean and how they contribute to your overall score.

Usage Hours

This is where the majority of your points will come from, with a maximum of 70 points. The point system for usage is calculated in hours and minutes. If you use your therapy for 1 hour you get 10 points, or for 2.3 hours (2 hours, 18 minutes) you get 23 points. The more time you use your therapy, the more points you receive, up to a maximum of 70 points (7 hours). Easy enough, right?

Tip: If you’re struggling to use your CPAP mask consistently throughout the night, you can try to increase your comfort by adding humidification or a heated hose.

Mask Seal

This factor has a maximum of 10 points, and is determined by how well your mask is sealed, resulting in minimal mask leak. You can get up to 10 points for the lowest mask leak rate, 5 points for moderate leak, and 0 points if you have a high leak rate.

Tip: If you’re finding your mask has a higher leak rate, you can try replacing the cushion or headgear. If you still see no success, you may want to look into how facial hair can cause some leak issues as well.

Mask On and Off

This factor has a maximum of 10 points, and is calculated by how often your mask is taken off throughout the night. The less you remove your mask, the higher score you’ll get here! If, for example, you remove your mask 1-2 times in a night, you’ll get 5 points. The key to scoring high here is to make sure your mask is as comfortable as possible.

Tip: Make sure you’re giving yourself time to get used to your CPAP mask by wearing it outside of just sleep time, like while you’re watching TV. Sure, that sounds a little silly, but it will help your therapy in the long run. Also, you can try aromatherapy for added comfort!

Events Per Hour (AHI)

This factor has a maximum of 10 points and is calculated by the number of apneas and hypopneas per hour. The lower the number of events, the higher the score. The only way to get the best score in this section is continued Sleep Apnea therapy. If you think your therapy isn’t progressing like it should after consistent use of your CPAP machine, make sure to consult with your doctor.

  1. MY APP ON MY PHONE HAS QUIT WORKING. WHEN I TAP TO ENTER, IT GOES TO THE SCREEN FOR A SPLIT SECOND AND THEN EXITS. ANY SUGGESTIONS TO CORRECT

    1. Hi Linda,

We are very sorry to hear about the app issues. We recommend deleting the app and then reinstalling it. If this does not resolve the issue, please call our customer support line at 1-800-356-5221 for live assistance.

      Michael

  2. The app reports less usage when I am actually using. For instance, I slept 12 midnight to 7am and it reported I only used the machine for 0.2 hours! Quite frustrating

    1. I am having this issue as well, the company called me the other day to tell me that I was not going to make my compliance of 70%! I was not really paying attention to how many hours I was using so I really paid close attention the last 3 days. I used the timer on my phone so every time I put the machine on I started the timer and pressed stop when ever I stopped the machine to go to the restroom. I did this all 3 days and I recorded between 3 and 4 hours more than what the machine report! What is going on with that? How do I fix this?

    2. I had the ResMed AirSense10 autoset machine on for the whole 7.5hours I slept and the distilled water ,reservoir was empty, yet the usage only showed 1:01, How do I get the machine to register the correct # of hours in the usage?

      1. Hi Thomas, i’m sorry that all of your usage time didn’t register with your machine. Did you confirm the 1:01 on the machine display for your sleep therapy data, or through the MyAir app?

Also, please confirm that the time zone is correct on your machine. You will need to enter the Clinical Menu, to confirm the time zone, if you need assistance with verifying, please give us a call and we can walk you through the process.

Also, since your heated humidifier is using all of the water in the chamber, please consider lowering the humidifier settings.

Are you using a heated (climateline) hose? If so, please make sure that the hose is set to manual and not auto.

        Have a wonderful day!

  3. I have a AirSense 10 (AutoSet), I have just ordered the F&P Brevida (M-L) mask, used for 7 days. My problem is the Mask Seal Leak app is always reporting “0”. I have checked for air leaks and don’t hear or feel any leaks. What can I do???

    1. I have just started using my Air mini and myy mask sccore has been 5 and ten but I have not felt any air leakes when I have mask on before going to sleep .What sort of score for mask fit should I be aiming at?

  4. My machine will also report less usage hours than actually slept.very rarely but it has happened. I have tried several masks always have a leak, unless I tighten it to the extreme. Then I feel uncomfortable and wake up.

  5. I am very dissapointed with this machine. I live 10 miles outside of town and apparently there are no cell towers to pick up the report. So those are totally useless to me. Company put an SD card in (after arguing with them for 2 weeks). Unless I take my machine I to town, they cannot access reports either.

    1. Hi Carole, it is easy to forget to turn the machine off. If you are just leaving your machine on and in standby, you are not causing any harm to your machine. If you have further questions, or concerns please reach us at: 1-800-356-5221.

      Have a great day!

  6. I turned the machine off to go to the bathroom and afterwards I turned it back on. It only recorded the first hours of use for that night . how to I get the remaining hours use recorded.

    1. Hi Robert, sorry that you are having an issue with getting the data for an entire night. If you have the AirSense 10, your machine should have recorded the data from when you returned from the restroom. Since this data is not showing up it could have something to do with the data transfer schedule. The manufacturer of your machine should be able to provide better insight as to what the data transfer schedule is, or why the data recording did not pick up from where you left off.

If you have further questions, or concerns we would be happy to assist you. Please reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you can reach ResMed (Manufacturer for AirSense) at: 1-800-424-0737.

      Enjoy your day!

    1. Hi Angela, the points that you receive basically tells you how well your CPAP Therapy is working for you. Being able to see your score allows you to take control of your therapy and see real time results on how your therapy is progressing and what factors are prohibiting you from getting the most out of your Sleep Apnea treatment.

If you would like further information on your MyAir score, please feel free to contact our customer service department at 1-800-356-5221 and we will be happy to speak with you.

      Enjoy your weekend!

  7. I find that if my wife talks to me and I answer her after putting on my nasal pillows, my mask seal score is lower possibly because of the air rushing out of my mouth? I suppose this is something I’ll have to live with because she’s definitely not going to stop talking to me.

    1. Hey Don, you are correct. The machine is detecting a leak because your mouth is opening and the air that is going in through your nostrils, is coming out from your mouth as you speak.

The only way to curve that is to make sure before you start your therapy, make sure your wife has no more conversations. Good luck with that because I always think of something else to say to my husband!

      We wish you the best!

    2. Last night I tried a cheap chin strap over my head gear. I had zero leaks for the first time. My mask is AirFit n30i with new nasal pillows. My provider gave the new nasal pillow to try. It was better, but still 30 on the leakage part. I will try the chin strap again tonight. The is the first time in 14 months that my mouth and throat were not parched.

  8. Used the app the first night had machine it worked great. Used it again last night and the app says my machine was not used last night. Why?

    1. Hi Cary,

I am sorry to hear that you are having a problem with your app. The reason you did not receive any data could be that you had no bluetooth connection, or if your phone was somehow put in airplane mode, then no data would have been recorded. Please see page 20 of the link below for more information.

      I hope this helps!

  9. I beg to differ with you but I have had over 7 hours for the last 30 days
Look at your records as I have ResMed

    1. Hi Albert, we have no record of any of our customer’s data, but if you are having problems obtaining a favorable score from your ResMed, we will be happy to speak with you about it. You are most welcome to contact our customer service department at: 1-800-356-5221, or e-mail us at: cpap@cpap.com.

  10. My max scores are different to those in the article?? I’m suspicious that the leakage report is not accurate with an APAP. I always get a high leakage score even though when awake I can detect no leakage at all.

    1. Hi Roger, my apologies for the delayed response. I am sorry to hear about your possible mask leak. What type of mask are you using? Is it nasal? If so, it could be that the leak is through your mouth. In this case you would want to either use a chinstrap to help keep your mouth closed while sleeping, or switch to a full face mask. Also, which machine are you currently using? Is it the AirSense 10? If so, you can view your leak rate in Clinical mode to help determine if the leak is from your mask seal, or a large leak for another reason.

If you would like further assistance with troubleshooting, please feel free to contact us at: 1-800-356-5221.

      Have a great day!

  11. I was wondering if I should turn my machine off when I get up at night. I generally have to get up 3 or 4 times and my score is reflecting high number of mask offs

      1. When I turn the machine off, each episode is counted and and points are taken off. This contradicts your answer that turning machine off should not count towards mask on and off.

    1. Should I turn my machine off when I get up at night; I generally go to the washroom 3 or 4 times

  12. I work several split schedules a week, where I will sleep for about 4 hours, work for about 4 hours and then sleep again for 6 hours or so. Unfortunately, this pattern can happen at any point in the day – it isn’t always at night. How does the AirSense 10 handle non-consecutive sleep hours?

    1. Hi Walt, the AirSense 10 will provide sleep data for any therapy that is over 4hrs. This means as long as you are using your machine for at least 4hrs, 1 minute, the machine should provide therapy results. This means even though you are not sleeping a lot at once the machine will still record your data.

Please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or via e-mail at: cpap@cpap.com.

      Have a great day!

  13. i cant get my ramp to turn on and wont highlight, i did one hour and 18 min. and feel strange, what can i do?

    1. Hello Carol, I am sorry to hear that you are having some issues with your settings. Which machine are you currently using? If you would like assistance with getting your ramp on, we will be more than happy to walk you through the steps over the phone.

Please feel free to contact us at: 1-800-356-5221, with your machine near you.

      Enjoy your day!

  14. Hello,

If I shut my machine off to let the dog out during the night, how long can it be off before it will affect my score for the night. Can I shut it off and restart it 30min later and have the score reflect both the time before and after I restarted it?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Joseph, it really depends on which machine you are using. For instance, the AirSense 10 requires that you use it for four consecutive hours in order for the data to be recorded. If you were to turn your machine off for 30 minutes after you have used the machine for four, or more hours, the machine will record that data and will reflect in your score. After you return, the machine will only record the data if you use the machine for at least four more hours.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions, or concerns please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221.

      Enjoy your weekend!

  15. Does using my electronic tablet, while I am wearing my nasal mask with my machine on, interfere with the data received in the myair app?

  16. New chap user, Trying to set up MyAir app, but once I select mask type and brand there are no selection for mask model so it won’t allow me to update and move forward.

    1. Hey Frank, the manufacturer, often times will only list the model of the masks that they make. If you are not using a ResMed manufactured mask, you should only select the mask type.

This should work well for you. If you are using a ResMed manufactured mask and are still experiencing a problem, please fee free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221 and we will be more than happy to assist you.

We wish you the best with your CPAP Therapy!

  17. On my CPAP machine, my mask seal rating is 20 with a smiley. But the MyAir software is saying that my mask seal is poor.. Which is the correct rating?

    1. Hi Alan, I can’t be certain where the 20 score is coming from on your machine. Usually, the machine will give you the night before, or the last 4 hours of the mask fit. The MyAir App, may be giving you the poor rating based upon your last 30 days average.

Have you changed your mask cushion within the last 3 months, or your entire mask in the last 6 months? If not, please consider replacing them as this may help with the mask leak that the MyAir Software is picking up on.

For further questions, or concerns, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: cpap@cpap.com.

      Have a great day!

  18. on the AHI score – what is the rationale behind providing a score for apnea events? if a person has apneas, in what way can a cpap decrease the # of events. If they didn’t have apnea events, they wouldn’t need a CPAP…consequently, if they use a CPAP they must be having apnea events which was the reason they needed one in the first place.

Also – how does the machine detect an apnea event? once detected, how does the machine respond?
If a person has apnea events, and the machine does what it’s supposed to, is it still counted as an apnea event?
this number doesn’t make a lot of sense

    1. Hey Rochelle, an AHI score can help a CPAP user and their doctor, or Sleep Specialist determine if the pressure setting is working for them. For instance, if a patient is prescribed a setting of (example 9cm, or 4-12cm), and there is an increase in apneas, an increase in AHI can help determine if the patient would benefit from a setting adjustment.

Also yes, you can still have Apnea events even when using a CPAP machine-so it would still be counted as an event.

Please feel free to reach us with any further questions, or concerns at: 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: cpap@cpap.com.

      Enjoy your day!

  19. My AHI numbers are much lower on my ResMed Auto 10 (1.4) than on my other CPAP Machine Fisher Paykel Icon..(4.5)…can you tell me why this might be ??

    1. Hi Richard, you may want to confirm that all of the settings are the same on both machines. Also, are you using the same mask on both machines?

If you would like to speak with us further, please feel free to contact us at: 1-800-356-5221, with both machines near you to confirm the settings.

Also, you may benefit from speaking with your doctor regarding the readings from both machines. Your doctor will be able to interpret your sleep data to confirm what may be causing the differences in your AHI readings.

  20. Quick question…I went to sleep after 12 last night and slept in this morning. My machine said I had 10 hours usage but the app said I didn’t use my machine. Is this because I put it on after midnight or is there an issue I should be concerned about? Thanks!

    1. Hey Jennifer, there are a few factors that you would consider. The reason for your data not showing on the app, could be because of the data schedule, but keep in mind that there could be a delay of the transmitted data. You must have cellular reception to transmit the data and the device must remain plugged into power and must not be in airplane mode.

Please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail further questions, or concerns to: cpap@cpap.com.

      We wish you the best!

  21. Don’t completely understand events per hr please give me a guide between not to bad to that’s bad? Mine is 5.6 per hr

    1. Hi Janet, it is common for new CPAP users, to be uncomfortable with the mask and CPAP therapy in general initially. My suggestion in your case, is to be patient, allow yourself time to become acclimated with your therapy.

Most CPAP users, must go through several masks before finding a mask that is comfortable. You may try wearing your mask while watching tv, or reading, this will allow you to become more comfortable with wearing the mask.

CPAP.com, understands that the only way you’ll know if a mask is a good fit for you, is by trying the mask. For this reason, we sell all of our masks with free 30 day returns (prescription required). If you would like assistance with deciding on a different mask that may be a good fit for you, or have any other questions, or concerns, please give us a call at: 1-800-356-5221.

      Best Wishes!

  22. I used my new AirSense10 for 3 or 4 days before downloading the MyAir app. Those days do not show up on MyAir, as I believe it said would be the case somewhere in the documentation. HOWEVER, I got a call from the monitoring people after the first night I used it, and I was told that she could see the data from that first night and everything looked good to her. So clearly the data were uploaded and are somewhere in the cloud. So how can I access these first few nights of data?

    1. Hey Ed, the explanation for someone contacting you about your data the first few days before you downloaded the MyAir app, is they must have enrolled, registered you for AirView. This is how providers monitor data and make changes to your settings remotely.

Since, you didn’t have MyAir for the first few days, you will not have access to the data during that time period.

For further questions, or concerns, please reach us at; 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: cpap@cpap.com.

      Have a great day!

    1. Hi Sharon, i’m sorry that all of your usage hours didn’t record. Please make sure your machine is set to the correct time zone. Also, keep in mind that your machine will not record your data, unless it is in use for four consecutive hours. If you are using the machine and then turning it off for the restroom, or for any other reason less than four hours, this could be the problem.

If you need assistance with making certain your machine has the correct time zone, or any further assistance, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221.

      Best Wishes!

  23. How are the events per hour calculated. Are they an average of the entire night or are they just the highest number then I had at any one time. For example if I see seven events per hour, is that an average to where I may have had some higher and some lower? Or seven the highest number of events I had that night?

    1. Hi Jyl, Your AHI, is the total number of apneas (pauses in breathing) plus the number of hypopneas (periods of shallow breathing) that occur on average, each hour. Only the apneas and hypopneas that last at least 10 seconds are counted. The AHI, is then calculated by dividing the number of events by the number of hours of sleep.

For further questions, or concerns, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: cpap@cpap.com.

      Have a great day!

  24. My score is reflecting that I have taken my mask off several times throughout the night. I never take the mask off once I turn the machine on. What is causing me to get a low score in this area?

Also, during this time of Coronavirus it is getting difficult to find distilled water. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Rebecca, i’m sorry that your having some problems with your CPAP therapy/score. It isn’t uncommon for a patient to remove their mask unconsciously.

Are you new to CPAP therapy? If so, you must become acclimated with wearing your mask. To do this, you should wear your mask while watching tv, reading, or any other activity so that you can become more comfortable wearing it during the night.

What mask are you using? Have you confirmed if your mask leak rate is high under your therapy data? Also, please check your mask fit. If your mask is leaking air, or the fit is not good, this could be why you’re removing your mask during the night and don’t remember.

Are you using a CPAP, or APAP? If using an APAP (auto-titrating) machine, if your machine detects a high leak rate, the machine will blow more air to compensate for the leak and the high pressure blowing would become uncomfortable to you, which could cause you to remove your mask.

Yes, it is very difficult to find distilled water. You are able to purchase distilled water from CPAP.com, but since its sold in small travel bottles, it can be costly. We stock a distilled water filtering system which should be more economical for you. Please see the links below for possible solutions.
