CPAP Replacement Guide: Keeping Your Therapy Fresh and Effective
Maintaining your CPAP equipment is crucial for effective therapy. Here's a simplified guide to help you keep track of when to replace your CPAP supplies:
CPAP Mask Frame: Every 6 to 12 months - Note: masks with silicone frames will likely need to be replaced more often than those with harder plastic frames.
- Signs to replace: Air leaks, discomfort, visible wear
- Tip: Clean weekly with warm water and gentle soap
Mask Cushion: Every 3 to 6 months - Note: if your mask uses a memory foam cushion, it should be replaced monthly.
- Signs to replace: Loose fit, discomfort, visible damage, more air leaks
- Tip: Wipe down or clean daily with soap and water to extend life
Headgear: Every 6 to 9 months - Note: one size fits most headgear may wear out faster than headgear with multiple adjustment points.
- Signs to replace: Stretched out, frayed fabric, needs more tightening, more air leaks
- Tip: Fit your mask and adjust your headgear while your machine is on and avoid overtightening. Mask should be snug, not tight
Hoses & Tubing: Every 6 to 12 months
- Signs to replace: Leaks, tears, odors, mineral build-up
- Tip: Clean weekly with gentle soap and a tube brush, hang to drip dry
Humidifier Water Chamber: Every 6 to 12 months
- Signs to replace: Mineral build-up, discoloration, odors, cracks, worn gaskets
- Tip: Only use distilled water, empty and dry daily, wash with soap and water weekly
Reusable Filter: Every 6 months - Note: most modern machines use disposable filters, so refer to your product manual for more specific maintenance steps.
- Signs to replace: Visible dirt, low airflow, machine is louder or higher pitched
- Tip: Inspect every two weeks, rinse as needed if instructed by your machine's manual
Disposable Filter: Every 1-6 months - Note: Some modern machines use disposable filters that last up to 6 months, but older machines may call for monthly replacements. Refer to your user manual for specific guidance.
- Tip: Not washable or reusable, replace at regular intervals
Oxygen Cannula & Tubing: Every 3 to 6 months
- Signs to replace: Leaks, tears, odors
- Tip: Clean weekly with vinegar/water solution
