Key Considerations

Trial and Error

The most important thing to understand when choosing a mask is that just because a mask is popular or designed well does not mean it's going to work well for you.

It's very common to try multiple CPAP masks before finding your perfect fit. That's exactly why we offer our 30 Day Mask Fit Guarantee.

If you don't like your new mask, reach out to our CPAP Guides within 30 days of purchase and we'll refund your mask so you can keep searching for one that's right for you.

Breathing Style

Your breathing style is going to have a significant influence on the types of masks that will work for you.

If you breathe through your nose and don’t have any obstructions (like a deviated septum), start with a nasal pillow or nasal mask. Otherwise, it may be better to start with a full face mask.

If you tend to breathe through your mouth but don't have any nasal obstructions, you might also like a smaller nasal-style mask with a chinstrap or mouth tape instead of a full face mask.

Pressure Setting

Typically, if your pressure setting is between 4-15 cmH2O, you can likely use whatever mask you like.

If you're on the higher end of that range, and especially if you're over 15 cmH2O, you'll likely find nasal pillow masks to be uncomfortable, though this isn't true for everyone. Nasal cradle masks also tend to be leakier at higher pressure settings.

For pressures over 15 cmH2O, the best options are nasal and full face masks that cover the nose rather than low profile options that cradle the nose.

Mask Footprint

Start with the most minimalistic mask you can find and work your way up from there.

Even if you breathe through your mouth and need a full-face mask, start with low-profile designs that cradle the nose rather than covering it.

Popular examples of low-profile full face masks include the AirFit F40, DreamWear Full Face, & Evora Full Face.

Preferred Sleeping Position

  • Back Sleeper: You can use just about anything!
  • Side Sleeper: Opt for lower-profile masks like nasal cradles or nasal pillows. Also look for masks with hose connections at the top of the head.
  • Active Sleeper: Smaller is better, and masks with hose connections at the top of the head are especially accommodating for tossing and turning.
  • Stomach Sleeper: Nasal pillows and nasal cradle masks are your best bet. If you need a full face mask, look for low-profile options with hose connections at the top of the head.

Material Type

  • Silicone:
    • Soft, flexible, and hypoallergenic
    • The most common material for CPAP mask cushions
    • Usually inflates with air pressure for a more flexible seal
  • Gel:
    • Offers a more customized fit by molding to the face
    • Heavier than silicone
    • Can be good for facial hair or sensitive skin
  • Memory Foam:
    • Soft and conforms to facial contours
    • Needs more frequent replacement
    • Can be good for facial hair
    • Great for sensitive skin
  • Cloth:
    • Great for sensitive skin
    • Lightweight
    • Typically hypoallergenic
    • Cleaning can be more of a hassle

When it comes to material, everyone has their own preference, so it’s important to experiment and see what works best for you.

Hose Connection Style

  • Front Connection:
    • Traditional, connects in front of the face
    • Typically a bit bulkier
    • Usually has at least one swivel to limit tube tangles
    • Can be challenging for stomach sleepers
  • Top-of-the-Head Connection:
    • Modern, connects above the head and flows air around the face
    • Keeps the hose out of the way
    • Ideal for active sleepers who change positions frequently
    • Air pressure noise near the ears can take getting used to
    • May not be great for light/sound-sensitive sleepers

Adjustability

  • Headgear Straps:
    • More adjustment points typically make for a better fit, but are more likely to need readjusting
    • Most masks have convenient magnetic clips which should be avoided if you have magnetically-sensitive or metallic implants

Trying a new mask? Opt for a “fit pack” which includes multiple cushions sizes, so you can find the exact right fit for you.

Day-to-Day Upkeep

  • Dexterity Challenges:
    • If you have arthritis in your hands or other dexterity challenges, look for masks that have minimal designs with very few parts. ResMed's AirFit series is a good place to start, and Fisher & Paykel masks also tend to be designed for ease-of-use.

          Prescription FAQs

Have questions about prescriptions? You're not alone.

Here are some of the most common questions we get about prescription requirements for CPAP machines:

How can I submit my prescription to cpap.com?

          • Direct Upload (Must be .pdf, .gif, .jpg, or .jpeg)
          • Email
            • rx@cpap.com: Must be a .jpg, .jpeg, .bmp, .gif, .pdf, .png, or .tiff.
            • Fax
              • Toll-Free: 866-353-2727
              • International: 713-541-7377

                • We can request a prescription from your doctor if they are located in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, or American Samoa.

Can I purchase a CPAP machine without a prescription?

No, in following with federal and local Texas laws you need a prescription to purchase a CPAP, APAP, or BiPAP machine, which are classified as Class II Medical Devices by the FDA.

Can I purchase a CPAP mask without a prescription?

All complete masks require a valid prescription before we're able to ship your order. This does not apply to mask assembly kits, which do not include headgear.

How can I get a CPAP prescription?

A sleep apnea diagnosis is required for a CPAP prescription, which is traditionally done through testing in a sleep lab. cpap.com offers a Home Sleep Test that is faster, more affordable, as accurate at diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and easier to complete than typical lab testing.

cpap.com also offers a convenient and affordable renewal service for out-of-date prescriptions

Will an old prescription meet requirements or do I need a new one?

If your prescription says "Lifetime Need" or "99 Months", it can be used to get equipment when needed. If your prescription notes a specific number of refills or an expiration date, it will be limited to those conditions.

Will cpap.com accept an international prescription?

We will accept any foreign prescription that has been translated into english and has the appropriate information present.

How can I tell if my prescription is valid?

Your prescription must include the following:
                        • Doctor's Information (Name, Credentials, Address, Phone Number)
                        • Doctor's Signature
                        • Your Full Name
                        • Item Being Prescribed
                        • Expiration Information

                          Who can write the prescription?

The prescription may be written by any of the following care providers:
                          • Medical Doctor
                          • Doctors of Osteopathy
                          • Psychiatrists (MD Only)
                          • Physicians Assistants

                          • Dentists
                          • Naturopathic Physicians

                            • Podiatrist
                            • Optometrist
                            • Psychologist

A CPAP prescription will allow you to purchase a CPAP OR APAP machine.

An APAP prescription only allows for the purchase of an APAP machine.

                                Mask Tips

                                Sizing a New Mask

Most masks offer a sizing template that you can print out at home, then use to find the right size cushion.

While this is generally a good approach, we've heard more than our fair share of stories where someone buys the cushion size that the sizing template told them to, only to find that their cushion is leaky, irritating, or downright uncomfortable.

Mask Fit Packs include multiple cushion sizes, so you'll be able to try each one directly and make the most accurate choice for your needs.

                                Mouth Breathing

Typically, full face masks are a better choice if you tend to breathe through your mouth.

If you opt for a nasal mask and you mouth falls open during sleep, therapy air will escape and significantly dry you out.

And, when therapy air is leaking out of your mouth, it isn't holding your airway open, resulting in ineffective therapy and more apnea events.

Even if you mouth breathe, nasal masks can be viable. A CPAP chinstrap or mouth tape can help keep your mouth closed while you sleep, empowering you to enjoy the full benefits of successful therapy.

                                CPAP Desensitization

Getting used to CPAP happens at different rates for different people. We recommend 'practicing' with CPAP during the day.

Whether that's napping, wearing your mask while working from home, or simply lounging with your mask on watching TV or reading a book, all of these activities can help train your brain to adjust to CPAP faster

                                Mask Liners

Mask liners serve as a soft cloth barrier between your skin and your CPAP mask. They can help reduce skin irritation, but their main purpose is to solve pesky leak issues that persist no matter how you sleep or tighten your headgear.

While they aren't available for every mask, you should be able to find one for most masks.

If you're struggling with a leaky mask, a mask liner may be just what you're missing.

                                Sleep Position

Experiment with different sleeping positions to find the most comfortable one that minimizes mask leaks and pressure points.

You might also find that a CPAP pillow allows you to sleep in familiar positions without drastically changing your sleep routine.

CPAP pillows are made with intentionally-designed cutouts to accommodate your mask and tubing, with some featuring adjustable heights and divots that mold to your head and neck.

Side sleeping is typically the best position to reduce apnea events.

                                Daily Cleaning Routine

When it comes to daily maintenance, you'll want to wash your mask cushion every day after use, or wipe it down with some CPAP cleaning wipes.

If your mask has a short tube connector, rinse it out and leave it to drip dry using a shower rod or CPAP hose hanger.

                                Weekly Deep Clean

Once a week, soak and wash your mask frame, headgear, and cushion in warm, soapy water.

Leave equipment to dry out of direct sunlight or invest in a Hurricane Equipment Dryer.

                                Self-Motivating

Adapting to CPAP can be challenging, but it's worth the effort. It's important to remind yourself why your sleep apnea needs to be treated.

When you feel like giving up, remember that treating sleep apnea improves your energy levels, cognitive performance, and mood regulation.

It also prevents serious health issues like chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, heart disease, alzheimer's, and more.

CPAP doesn't just protect your health, though, it empowers you to show up more fully for your life and relationships.

Whether it's staying awake through your niece's dance recital, keeping up with rambunctious grandchildren, or simply finding the energy to enjoy your hobbies again, CPAP empowers you to be present for life's little moments with the people and activities you love.

We think that's worth pursuing, and we hope you agree.

Let's tackle sleep apnea together and embrace a healthier, more vibrant life.

I've tried all different configurations of masks. I thought because I normally slept with my mouth open this wouldn't work for me but I naturally keep my mouth closed now when I sleep.

I was excited to receive the Resmed F40 because it was smaller and said to be for side sleepers. I was skeptical because I had similar masks to the F40 that leaked despite adjustments. I am glad to report that it is very comfortable and does not leak.

I have tried at least ten different masks. This one hit the mark. It is very comfortable and works well even with a mustache. Very good design.

                                    CPAP Mask FAQs

Does every CPAP mask require a prescription?

We must have a valid prescription to ship any complete CPAP mask we sell. For your convenience, we offer an easy prescription renewal service as well as a Home Sleep Test program as a means to obtain a new prescription. Additionally, “mask kits”—which do not include headgear—may be purchased as a means of quickly refreshing vital parts of your current mask, and do not require a prescription.

Is every CPAP mask compatible with every machine?

For the most part, there are no wrong choices when it comes to pairing a CPAP mask with any PAP machine. The most notable exception is ResMed’s AirMini Travel CPAP, which is designed to work only with a handful of select ResMed brand CPAP masks. Outside of this, most masks and machines use a standard 22mm connection for maximum compatibility.

I have a BiPAP machine. Do I need a BiPAP mask?

No, CPAP masks are designed to be universally compatible with all types of PAP machines. If, however, your prescription calls for a pressure setting over 15 cmH2O, be sure to avoid nasal pillow masks, as they tend to be uncomfortable at higher pressure settings.

What’s the difference between a silicone, gel, or memory foam mask cushion?

Silicone is the industry standard, and it is designed to inflate with pressure to offer a combination of comfort and stability.

Gel masks may work better for higher pressure settings, sensitive skin, and facial hair. Gel masks are also often heavier than their silicone counterparts.

Memory foam masks are easily the most comfortable, as they conform to the lines and curves of your face more personally. This also makes them a good fit for those with beards. They typically need to be replaced the most frequently, and should only be wiped down, rather than washed.

When it comes to facial hair, every person is different. What works well for one person may not work at all for another, so we recommend trying a few styles at first to see what you like the most.

What if I try a mask and it doesn’t work for me?

When you order from cpap.com, you have 30 days (from the purchase date) to decide if your mask is the right fit or not. If your new mask isn’t working out, reach out to one of our CPAP Guides and they will walk you through the refund and exchange process. If you’d like, they will also help you select a new mask to try that may better suit your needs.

How do I clean my mask?

(For Gel & Silicone Cushions): Every morning after use, you’ll want to remove your mask cushion and wash it with warm soapy water or clean it with a mask wipe. If your mask has a short tube extending from it, you’ll also want to rinse that and leave it to drip dry. Replace cushion every 1-3 months.

(For Memory Foam Cushions): Every morning after use, remove your mask cushion and clean it with a mask wipe. Replace cushion monthly.

(Any Material): Once a week, you should wash your headgear, mask frame, short tube (if applicable) and other misc. components in warm, soapy water, then leave them to air dry out of direct sunlight.

How often should CPAP masks be replaced?

To ensure your mask stays functional and hygienic, it’s recommended to replace the cushion every 1-3 months, and the whole mask every 9 to 12 months. If you notice an increase in mask leaks or visible damage to the mask, it’s time to order a replacement.

How much does a CPAP mask cost?

Depending on the quality and style of your CPAP mask, the cost ranges from around $50 to $200, though you may find options outside this range, too On cpap.com, you can filter CPAP mask options by price to easily find one that fits your budget.

What mask should I get if I have seasonal allergies?

If you experience recurring allergies or frequent colds, a full face CPAP mask or oral CPAP mask will work best as nasal masks may not be as effective.

Four tips for finding your perfect fit

                                    1
                                    Know how you breathe

If you're able to reliably breathe through your nose and don't have any sort of chronic obstruction or difficulty breathing, you can use any mask. If not, you'll probably want a full face mask.

                                    2
                                    Know how you sleep

Your favorite sleeping position matters a lot. If you're a side sleeper, you'll want a minimalistic mask that doesn't stick out too far. Stomach sleepers and active sleepers that toss and turn will do well with a mask that connects at the top of the head, rather than in front of it. Back sleepers can use just about any mask.

                                    3
                                    Start small

It's always a good idea to start with the most minimalistic mask style you can find to accommodate your needs. More surface area means a high chance for mask leaks that sabotage your therapy success.
