CPAP Machine FAQs
What's CPAP?
CPAP stands for "continuous positive airway pressure". A CPAP machine uses a turbine to create a flow of pressurized air. This pressure is then delivered to your airway via a CPAP tube and mask to prevent apnea events.
Apnea events occur when the airway collapses during sleep, manifesting as loud snoring, complete stoppage of breathing, or gasping for air.
These disruptions to your sleep can happen up to hundreds of times an hour in the most severe cases, and can have cascading impacts to many areas of your health and wellness.
Are CPAP machines ventilators?
CPAP machines are not ventilators. Ventilators help people breathe when they have a condition impacting their lung function and are intended for 24-hour respiratory support.
Meanwhile, a CPAP machine is intended for regular use and works to keep your airway during sleep.
While some BiPAP machines are capable of initiating breathing if needed, PAP machines are not intended to breathe "for you".
Will my machine be brand new?
Every cpap.com product is brand new and has never been used.
I'm a new user, what do I need to buy?
You will need a CPAP machine and a CPAP mask for effective CPAP therapy. A CPAP hose is required to connect the two, but most machines will include one.
For your convenience, we also offer CPAP Starter Packs that include multiple CPAP machine and mask options at varying prices for new users.
It's also good to be prepared for daily and weekly upkeep with a handful of cleaning supplies and a good tube brush.
During the course of your CPAP therapy, you'll need to routinely replace worn parts like your mask cushion, headgear, and air filters for your machine.
You may also find that you need or enjoy additional components, such as mask liners, CPAP mask strap pads, chinstraps, insulated hose coverings, or a hose management system.
Do I need to use CPAP all night, every night?
Yes, CPAP is intended to be used at all times during sleep, including during daytime naps.
In most cases, 4 hours a night is a good benchmark for your first month of therapy, though we certainly encourage you to work towards sleeping with CPAP full time to unlock the life-changing benefits of restful sleep.
Tracking progress with your machine's companion app or a third party tool like OSCAR is a great way to stay engaged with your therapy and keep pushing for consistently good results.
If you're still struggling to adapt, don't hesitate to reach out to our CPAP Guides for personalized assistance.
What maintenance do CPAP machines require?
The most common maintenance your machine requires is a change of the air filter. Your machine's user manual will inform how often this should happen, but most devices need a new filter each month to maintain clean air. Some machines use washable, reusable filters instead of disposable ones, too.
You'll also want to empty and dry your humidifier daily, and wash it weekly.
Steer clear of ozone or activated oxygen cleaners, as these can degrade internal components and even void the manufacturer's warranty.
