Claustrophobia triggered by CPAP is not uncommon for people that are just starting out with CPAP therapy and is typically triggered by full-face masks that encompass the nose and mouth or masks with thick forehead supports that reduce visibility. It’s important to choose a design that doesn’t promote feelings of claustrophobia. The best CPAP mask for claustrophobia will have an unobstructed sightline, minimal facial footprint, or use a very thin bar to support the forehead pad. Shop CPAP masks for claustrophobia below, which we hand-picked to reduce or eliminate claustrophobic feelings whether you’re experienced with CPAP or just starting out.

If you get feelings of claustrophobia during CPAP therapy, it may be a good idea to reconsider the mask you’re using and whether it is triggering you unnecessarily. You’ll typically want to avoid traditional full-face CPAP masks that rest over your nose and around your mouth, as well as masks with bulky frames that limit your line of sight. Masks that cover a large area of your face can also be triggering, and it’s equally as important to ensure that your mask cushion is the right size for you.
The best CPAP masks for claustrophobia generally have thin frames and make very little contact with your face to limit sensory overload. They will also typically have an unobstructed line of sight and may even have a top-of-head hose connection instead of one directly in front of your face. These masks will typically be nasal or nasal pillow masks as they have smaller footprints, but hybrid full face masks like the AirFit F30i and DreamWear Full Face Mask provide therapy air to both your nose and mouth without taking up more space than necessary.
When choosing a new CPAP mask, we suggest ordering a Fit Pack instead of the standard mask, even if you’re confident about your cushion size. While sizing guides are typically a good indicator when used correctly, you might actually find that you get better sleep with a cushion size that is smaller or larger than the one indicated by your mask’s sizing guide. By ordering a Fit Pack, which includes every available cushion size, you can try each size cushion and see which one provides the best results to ensure you’re getting the best therapy experience possible.
Regardless of your mask choice, it’s a good idea when first starting CPAP therapy to wear your mask during the day and use your CPAP machine during naps, if you take them, in order to get used to wearing a CPAP mask. By wearing your mask while doing chores around the house, reading, or watching TV, you’re priming your brain to become more familiar with the equipment, which should ease feelings of claustrophobia when it’s actually time for bed.
Using your machine’s ramp feature can also help to minimize feelings of claustrophobia that are caused directly by the pressure itself. Ramp allows you to start therapy at a lower and more tolerable pressure while you fall asleep, which should reduce or eliminate pressure-related claustrophobia.
Keep in mind that CPAP therapy is a long-term commitment and your mindset will also play a role in what you’re willing to tolerate in order to break through to better sleep health. If you see your equipment as something to be frustrated and inconvenienced by, you’ll set yourself up to use it less and less over time. By viewing your therapy equipment as a solution for daytime tiredness, for reclaiming your mood regulation and energy levels, and reducing your risk for complications like heart disease and stroke, you’ll likely have a more positive therapy outlook and will be more determined to push through the discomfort rather than succumbing to it.

I was having issues with irritation on my nose from other masks and called the good people at CPAP.Com to discuss options. They recommended this alternative. After some preliminary adjustment, the mask works wonderfully allowing me to sleep on my side, as well as on my back, and no leakage. Love this new mask.

This mask is the most comfortable and least intrusive mask I've ever owned. I highly recommend the Pad A Cheek padding to buy with it, it makes it even better. It is great for people who sleep on their side or stomach because the design allows the air in regardless of your sleep position.

I have not been a CPAP user for a long time, but I have already tried four masks! FINALLY, I have found one I can live with. The hose from the top of the head is a real game changer. Based on the measurement directions, I had ordered a medium, but I was still struggling with leaks. After talking to a customer service agent, I ordered the small. Hardly any leaks. I can sleep on my side. I don't feel claustrophobic, and I am never tangled up in my hose.

ResMed did a great job with this mask. Definitely, the quietest CPAP mask I have ever used. Having the hose connection on the top of the head makes it easier to move in bed and makes the hose less obtrusive. The Starter Pack also means getting the best-fitting cushion.

I am new to CPAP. This mask was recommended by my doctor. It is light-weight and easy to use. Generally comfortable. Definitely takes some time to get used to, but works as expected. Would purchase again.

I’ve used all sorts of masks in the past seeking the ‘perfect seal’ and comfort. Very few have hit that mark. I’ve used nasal pillow masks, full face masks, the cloth mask that is listed here. All had their pros and cons but I was never fully satisfied over the long run. Then, I saw the email promoting this new style mask, and fortunately for me it was time for a mask. I was frustrated with my previous mask (cloth) which leaked non-stop unless I was in the exact right position, and the full face mask that also had tiny annoying leaks - so I decided to give this a try. A week in and I love the DreamWisp! The mask has not leaked for me at all overnight - not once in the first week! It allows me to sleep in any position (I sleep on my back and sides) without becoming dislodged by the pillow. The dual exhausts on it help assure me that if I cover one of them via my sleeping position everything will continue to operate safely. The mask is pretty comfortable - and fairly light. It doesn’t irritate your nose as other nasal masks can nor does it leave a noticeable mark on your face come morning either. One great benefit is - it leaves enough of your face open so that your Apple devices with FaceID will actually work while you have it on. I don’t use a chin strap - but to me, it seems that you could easily use just about any style and it would work out nicely for you. I feel I finally found a great new mask that I look forward to using now. They claim you can clean it in the dishwasher - but I haven’t tried that yet. Used the CPAP wipes they advertise here for a quick touch-up before bed. I highly recommend this mask to people who are frustrated with other masks that don’t seal properly for them, as well as other people who generally prefer nasal pillow masks.

My nurse at the sleep clinic had me try this mask. It is perfect for someone who sleeps on their side. I have minimal leaks with this mask, much fewer than an AirFit N20.
