Uncomfortable red marks and skin irritation can result if your CPAP mask is ill-fitting or rubbing up against your skin. If you have sensitive skin, mask irritation can make your CPAP therapy unbearable. That’s where mask liners come in—adding comfortable padding between your mask and your skin while also helping to prevent leaks.
Mask leaks can result in fragmented sleep and a dry, irritated sensation in your eyes, throat, or mouth. When you have a CPAP mask leak, it can increase the noise from your CPAP mask because your therapy air is escaping. The biggest problem when it comes to a leak is that you aren’t receiving the full benefits of your CPAP therapy since the right level of air pressure is not being delivered. If you are experiencing a mask leak, then you are not receiving your prescribed therapy pressure, which keeps your airway from collapsing.
To maintain comfortable and consistent CPAP therapy, we carry a wide variety of CPAP mask liners that are designed to minimize leaks while also helping to prevent red marks and skin irritation.
There are a variety of reasons your CPAP mask might begin to leak, including:
Clean and Replace Your Equipment Regularly: Mask leaks can result due to sweat and facial oils degrading your mask by adhering to the cushion and breaking it down, reducing the quality of your seal and leading to leaks. To counteract this, clean your face nightly before putting on your mask to eliminate any sweat and oils, and stay consistent in your mask cleaning. Be sure to replace your mask cushion and pillows every three to six months or when they are showing signs of wear and tear to ensure a secure seal free from leaks. If your equipment is breaking down, this can also lead to overtightening, causing skin irritation.
Mask Liners: After ensuring your face and equipment are clean, prevent leaks using cloth liners, which add a support barrier between your mask’s cushions or nasal pillows and your skin to add comfort and maintain a secure fit. We offer cloth liners for full face, nasal, and nasal pillow CPAP masks.
We also carry nasal gel pads like the Gecko Nasal Pad and the Boomerang Gel Pad, which can help alleviate nasal bridge soreness and prevent air from leaking into your eyes.
Try a Mask Fit Pack: Improperly sized mask cushions or nasal pillows are also common culprits for mask leaks. When purchasing a new mask, try a fit pack initially to try all the cushion or nasal pillow sizes. Sometimes, you may need to experiment with a smaller or larger size cushion or nasal pillow to achieve a secure seal that is free of leaks.
Add a Chinstrap: If you prefer the less-bulky nasal or nasal pillow CPAP masks over a full face mask, then try incorporating a CPAP chinstrap to keep your mouth from dropping open and causing leaks from your mouth. CPAP chinstraps can be comfortably fit underneath or on top of your CPAP mask to gently support the chin to keep your mouth closed through the night.
Use the Right Mask for Your Pressure Settings: Some CPAP wearers might experience leakage when using a nasal pillow mask with a therapy pressure above 10 to 15 cmH2O. Full face masks are typically more capable of handling higher pressures. Padded liners for your nasal pillow mask may be able to stop your leakage issues, but switching to a full face mask could be much more comfortable if liners don’t solve the problem.
What Are the Benefits of CPAP Mask Liners?
As a barrier, a CPAP mask liner adds a layer of comfortable protection between your skin and your mask to prevent mask leaks, red marks, and skin irritation. Mask liners can reduce irritation that may result from your mask thanks to the additional padded layer while reducing leaks and improving your therapy success.
How Long Do Mask Liners Last?
Each mask liner is designed with a different intended replacement schedule from daily to weekly to monthly. Mask liners like the RemZzzs brand are designed for single use, and on CPAP.com, they come with a 30-day supply, so you have a fresh, clean liner each night. Liners such as the Silent Night brand are designed to be changed every six to eight days to ensure maximum comfort. Gel pads like the Boomerang and the Gecko should be replaced every 30 days. NozeSeal Adhesive Strips were crafted to say goodnight to noisy leaks and mask discomfort and should be replaced each night.
Are Mask Liners Reusable and Washable?
Mask liners come in two options: reusable and single-use. Reusable mask liners should be replaced weekly or monthly, based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Reusable mask liners, such as those from Silent Night, are not designed to be cleaned. Instead, remove the Silent Night Liners to wash your mask each day and then reapply before going to bed. Single-use mask liners should be discarded after each use.
I have used RemZzzs CPAP Mask Liners for eight years and find them to be very helpful in preventing leaks from my masks as well as preventing any mask irritation.
