Universal Power

The Respironics Legacy BiPAP machines operate automatically between 110v and 240v AC. When traveling either inside or outside the USA, there are no switches to switch or fuses to change. The machine will automatically sense what voltage is needed and set itself to run on that power.

The user will need to adapt the plug that goes into the wall to fit the style of outlet socket that is being used. This is simply done with a Power Adapter Plug kit. This is the same type of plug adapter that would be used with a hair dryer or an electric shaver. World Traveler Power Adapter Plugs.

Respironics RP-DC Power Adapter

Respironics Legacy BiPAP machines come equipped with a DC plug on the back of the unit. This allows the user to connect the BiPAP to an external DC battery source. This cord is ideal for travel by recreational vehicle, boat, or any external DC battery that is equipped with a cigarette lighter plug.
What is ramp?
The ramp button on a machine is a feature that allows for a gradual pressure build-up to your prescribed pressure. The feature is enjoyed by those with high pressures because it eases up to their pressure.
What is exhalation relief?
Exhalation relief is a comfort feature which reduces the air flow at the time of exhalation, making the breathing process more natural.

The following are the different types of exhalation relief names by manufacturer.

  • Philips Respironics = C-Flex, C-Flex+, A-Flex and Bi-Flex
  • Resmed = EPR (Expiratory Pressure Relief)
  • 3B Medical = RESlex
  • Apex Medical = PVA (Pressure Variation Algorithm) Pressure Relief
  • Curative Medical = EUT (Expiratory Unloading Technology)
  • DeVilbiss = SmartFlex
  • Fisher & Paykel = SensAwake Technology
  • Human Design Medical = Z-Breathe
  • Somnetics = EZEX

Here are some machines with an exhalation relief feature:

What maintenance is required on machines?
The only care a CPAP, APAP or BiPAP machine requires is to clean or change the filters at the air intake. This keeps the internal parts from accumulating dust. Fine paper filters should be changed out every 30 days, or when they appear soiled. Foam washable filters should be rinsed with clear running water once a week, allowed to air dry, and reinserted.

Here are some other suggested actions to care for your machine:
  • Keep the area around your machine clean by removing any dust from the area to improve the air quality delivered to your machine and to you.
  • Keep the air intake of the machine unblocked. Curtains, bedding, and papers can easily block the air intake of your machine, reducing the airflow.
  • If a humidifier is used with your therapy, do not pick up the machine with the humidifier attached. With most machines it is easy to spill water from the humidifier chamber into the machine causing damage. Manufacturer warranties are voided by water damage to the machine. To avoid this, remove the chamber from the humidifier and then remove the humidifier from the machine rather than transporting them together.
  • If a humidifier is used, empty the water from the chamber every morning. Accidents happen. If a family pet or family member moves the machine and humidifier with water in the chamber it is more likely that water could be spilled into your machine. Water damage to a machine voids the manufacturer warranty.

How do I use a battery to operate my CPAP?

All machines can connect to DC power. Some machines are configured to operate on DC Power and have a DC power outlet. Other machines require AC power and will need an Inverter that turns DC power to AC power.

Having the proper equipment is the biggest key to successfully operating the machine from a battery. For example, if your machine does have a DC outlet and you want to run your machine from a marine battery, be sure to get the correct DC cable for the machine, as well as an adapter cable with alligator clips that fits over the cigarette lighter plug.

CPAP.com sells complete battery kits with everything you need for many machines including the correct cables for those machines and batteries. If you have questions about the specific power needs of your machine, review the 'Power' tab found on the machine's product page, or give us a call at 1-800-356-5221.

What are the CPAP, BiPAP, Sleep Apnea, and Oxygen related HCPCS, CPT or billing codes?

E1399 is Miscellaneous and is used for other CPAP and Oxygen items.
What is the difference BiPAP and BiPAP ST?
A BiPAP (also referred to as a BiLevel or VPAP) delivers two set pressures, a higher pressure for inhalation and a lower pressure for exhalation.

BiPAP and BiPAP ST machines are similar, as they are both designed to provide the same airway pressure. The difference between a BiPAP and a BiPAP ST is the Spontaneous Timed feature. The ST responds to the user when the minimum number of breaths per minute has not been met. This machine ensures all breaths occur by triggering the user to take another breath within the minute.

For example, a BiPAP might be set at the following:
  • Inhalation Pressure - 10
  • Exhalation Pressure - 5
In this case, a BiPAP will provide an IPAP of 10 and EPAP of 5.

A BiPAP ST might be set at the following:
  • Inhalation Pressure - 10
  • Exhalation Pressure - 5
  • 12 BPM (Breath Per Minute)
Similarly to the regular BiPAP, the BiPAP ST will provide an IPAP of 10 and EPAP of 5, and will additionally monitor if you inhale 12 times within the minute. Please Note: The ST will not breathe for you, rather it will prompt the user to take a breath.
What does CPAP software do?
CPAP software allows for the downloading of information from certain CPAP machines. Information on breathing, pressure levels delivered, apneas, etc. is available to help determine the effectiveness of CPAP therapy. Software is not required to operate a CPAP machine. CPAP software provides more data than the information obtained through the on-screen display or SmartCode. Also, the software allows you and your doctor to view any night of recorded data by revealing results on an hour by hour basis.

Some CPAP manufacturers maintain a proprietary software package that is only compatible with their machines.

Here is a list of each manufacturer and the name of its related full data software available:
What types of Software are available?
There are two types of software available: compliance software and advanced software.

Compliance software provides data such as patient hours, total machine operating hours, pressure setting, and pressure relief information. Advance software includes compliance data, as well as more detailed data such as AHI (Apnea/Hypopnea Index), leakage, average pressure, and a graphical representation of data.

Compliance software is available with some standard CPAP machines. Advanced software is available with most top of the line CPAP machines, APAP machines, and BiLevel machines.
How do I interpret my data?
Software data can be interpreted by your physician or clinician. There are also many websites and search engines available to help you research the sleep apnea related terms which will provide more knowledge in managing your own CPAP therapy. Visit CPAPtalk.com, our free sleep apnea forum, which is a great resource for CPAP users who want to understand their condition and take control of their health.

BIPAP ST Gray Model

Verified purchase | Mar. 25, 2008 | Verified CPAP.com Customer
I bought the BIPAP ST machine to have a back up to my Synchrony and to have a machine that is smaller and lighter to make traveling easier. So far I have been impressed with the machine. It is much quieter that my Synchrony plus it has the smart card reporting which allows me to track my apnea results. While it only gives the number of apneas each night, that is more useful than what the Synchrony gave. Because I have central apnea it is important for me to be able to tweak the machine settings and then see the impact they have. I would recommend this machine to anyone.

Happy ST user

Verified purchase | Dec. 22, 2007 | Verified CPAP.com Customer
Having an old respironics ST model for 10years, it was time to upgrade. The first thing I noticed was how much quieter the new unit was compared to the older model, and also how much lighter and smaller. At first the electronic menu options I found confusing, perhaps due to my age but once I became accustomed to the menu it has been a breeze. My husband and I took the unit away with us on holidays and a cruise. It operated with different electrical voltages without a problem. I must have an ST model and I am very pleased with this new purchase.By the way I live in Australia and congratulate Cpap for their excellent service and delivery, accordingly I am also a new and happy Cpap customer.

S/T A Necessity for Central Sleep Apnea

Verified purchase | Nov. 27, 2007 | Verified CPAP.com Customer
I have central sleep apnea and have used three Respironic PAP machines, a CPAP, a BiLevel Auto M series and the BiPAP ST New Gray Model with Smart Card. After using the ST for threee days my apnea rate increased from 149 to 349. This was beacuse the timed backup was reducing the duration of the event which allowed for more events. This is the first machine which has allowed me to acheive a deep restful sleep. I really liked the egineering in the BiLevel Auto M series as it was compact, easy to travel with, low noise level, very reponsive to patient breathing patterns but it lacks the one feature which I require which is the timed back up rate. The noise level of the BiPAP ST is a little higher but still very acceptable. It is bulkier for traveling so buy a second at auciton for your hunting lodge or beach house. I really enjoy having the software reports as tehy allow me to more activly manage my sleep habits. If you have central sleep apnea, the ST is ESSENTIAL.
