FAQs - All CPAP Masks Collection

What are the three main types of CPAP masks?

The three main types of CPAP masks are:

  • Full Face Masks – Cover both the nose and mouth, making them ideal for mouth breathers, back sleepers, or those requiring high pressure settings. Best for users who need a secure seal regardless of sleep position.
  • Nasal Masks – Cover only the nose, offering a balance of comfort and effectiveness. Recommended for side sleepers, active sleepers, or those who prefer a less bulky fit.
  • Nasal Pillow Masks – Minimalist design with soft cushions that seal at the nostrils. Ideal for those with facial hair, people who want an open field of vision, or those who feel claustrophobic in larger masks.

Choosing the right mask is crucial for effective CPAP therapy. Many leading brands like ResMed, Philips Respironics, and Fisher & Paykel offer a range of designs to ensure comfort and compliance. Need help finding the perfect fit? Our 60-Night Mask Fit Guarantee ensures you get a mask that works for you.

Can any CPAP mask be used with any CPAP machine?

Most CPAP masks work with any machine thanks to their standard 22mm hose connection. The AirMini Travel CPAP is the exception, featuring a unique tubing connector that differs from standard CPAP machines. But don’t worry—our Zephair universal adapter lets you use any mask you prefer.

How do I choose the right size for my CPAP mask?

1️⃣ Use the Manufacturer’s Sizing Guide – Most brands like ResMed, Philips Respironics, and Fisher & Paykel offer printable or physical sizing templates to ensure accuracy. You can find our sizing guides in our 'Tips & Resources' section on each product page.

2️⃣ Consider Your Facial Shape & Sleep Position – A mask should fit snugly without pressure points. Side sleepers may need a smaller, contoured fit, while full face masks should sit securely for mouth breathers.

3️⃣ Take Advantage of 30 Day Mask Fit Guarantee – We understand finding the right mask can take time – that's why we offer our 30-day mask fit guarantee, so you can try different sizes until you feel completely comfortable.

A good fit prevents air leaks, reduces skin irritation, and enhances therapy effectiveness. Read our Guide to Finding the Right Mask Fit for more information.

Are there alternative CPAP mask styles available?

Yes, in addition to the three main types of CPAP masks, there are several alternative styles available, including:

Hybrid Masks combine the best features of full face and nasal pillow masks, creating a gentle seal both under your nose and around your mouth. They're ideal if you're looking for the security of a full face mask with a lighter, less intrusive feel.

Nasal Prong Masks offer a minimalist approach, with soft prongs that rest just inside your nostrils. These masks are perfect if you prefer a barely-there sensation while you sleep and don't need mouth coverage.

Oral Masks focus on delivering air through your mouth rather than your nose. If you primarily breathe through your mouth or find nasal masks uncomfortable, this style might be your path to peaceful sleep.

Total Face Masks provide a different approach by distributing pressure evenly across your entire face. They're particularly helpful if you experience sensitivity to pressure points or need higher pressure settings for effective therapy.

Headgear-Free Masks like the Bleep DreamPort offer a revolutionary approach to CPAP therapy, using gentle adhesive technology instead of traditional straps. This innovative design might be your answer if you're looking for complete freedom from headgear while maintaining an effective seal.

How often should I replace my CPAP mask cushion and headgear?

CPAP Mask Cushions: Replace these every 1-3 months to maintain optimal performance. A worn cushion can compromise your therapy through air leaks and reduced comfort.

CPAP Headgear: Replace headgear every 3-6 months to ensure a comfortable, secure fit without pressure marks. Elastic headgear stretches over time, while Velcro fit tabs may start to lose their grip.

Time for a Replacement? Watch for discoloration, odor, residue buildup, loss of strap elasticity, increased skin irritation, or frequent air leaks.

Can I use a nasal or nasal pillow mask if I’m a mouth breather?

It's possible to use a nasal or nasal pillow mask even if you breathe through your mouth. Many of our customers find success by pairing their nasal mask with a chin strap or mouth tape to keep their mouth closed during sleep. This combination helps ensure the therapy air pressure stays consistent throughout the night, giving you the full benefits of your CPAP therapy. Contact our CPAP Guides to explore which option might work best for your sleeping style.

Which CPAP masks work with the AirMini?

There are 3 ways to get a mask that works with your AirMini:

1. You can order an AirMini Setup Pack + Mask. This includes a ResMed mask that is compatible with the AirMini, plus an AirMini hose.

2. You can add an AirMini Adaptor Kit to a ResmMed mask you already own. These kits do not come with a mask, but they do include the AirMini mask adaptor and AirMini hose.

3. Or you can use a regular CPAP mask with the Zephair Universal Adapter, but it won't be compatible with a HumidX device.
