Learn More About Your New Machine

The SleepStyle 242 CPAP machine was specifically designed to work with Performance Maximizer software and SmartStick Technology, which helps track therapy effectiveness. This system includes several comfort features such as Altitude compensation up to 9,000ft, leak compensation, and software capabilities. The SleepStyle 242 CPAP supports basic compliance, mask leaks, and pressure readings from the display or software.

Performance Maximizer offers basic compliance data. Use the SmartStick to conveniently transfer data to view therapy effectiveness.

Unlike other machines, the SleepStyle 242 CPAP is an all-in-one, fully integrated solution that ensures the machine travels easily and is compact. The built in humidifier comes with Ambient Tracking Plus, which provides effective humidity under changing conditions. Sensors measure both the inside and outside temperatures of the airflow, then adjusts the humidity levels to prevent condensation buildup and nasal discomfort during mask leaks.

Universal Power

These CPAP machines operate automatically between 110v and 240v AC. When traveling either inside or outside the USA, there are no switches to switch or fuses to change. The machine will automatically sense what voltage is needed and set itself to run on that power.

The user will need to adapt the plug that goes into the wall to fit the style of outlet socket that is being used. This is simply done with a Power Adapter Plug kit. This is the same type of plug adapter that would be used with a hair dryer or an electric shaver. World Traveler Power Adapter Plugs.

Respironics Battery Kit with 400 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter.

This battery kit comes with an external 400 Watt DC to AC power inverter for CPAP and BiPAP machines. The kit provides AC power for machines that do not come with a DC input. Use your machine's AC cord to connect to the power inverter. The Respironics portable battery pack is an external lead acid battery that is the ultimate in power, portability and convenience. This battery kit comes with the Respironics battery and the 400 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter.
What does CPAP therapy do?
CPAP therapy provides a constant airflow which holds the airway open so that uninterrupted breathing is maintained during sleep. It is traditionally provided through a nasal mask that seals around the nose to maintain the pressure level.
What is a heated humidifier?
A heated humidifier uses heat to warm the water to add moisture to the airstream. The heat is adjustable for more or less moisture. A heated humidifier water chamber is much smaller than a passover humidifier water chamber.

In our experience, it is common for CPAP users to report that their therapy is greatly enhanced by the use of a heated humidifier.

There are three types of heated humidifiers:

What is a built in humidifier?
A "built in" humidifier is designed as a part of the CPAP machine and cannot be removed or separated from the CPAP machine. As with an integrated humidifier, the design eliminates the need for a second hose or power cord. The water chamber can be removed for cleaning or replacement purposes.

The advantage of a "built-in" humidifier is its compact shape, which operates on fewer parts. This integrated design helps to ensure optimum moisturized comfort and effectiveness when CPAP therapy and humidification are used together. Also, it allows an option for the humidification to be turned off while the CPAP is blowing.

A disadvantage is that a built in humidifier may produce less moisture if used as passover because the surface area is typically smaller. Also, since the humidifier is "built in" to the machine, detaching it is not an option. This can be an issue for frequent travelers. Lastly, if the machine or humidifier stops working, the entire unit must be sent in for repair or replacement, not just the component that failed.

An example of a machine with a built in humidifier is the ICON Auto CPAP Machine with Built In Heated Humidifier and SensAwake as seen below. ICON Auto CPAP Machine with Built In Heated Humidifier and SensAwake

Which CPAP masks work on which machines?

Any mask will work with any machine, with one important exception. The ResMed AirMini is only compatible with certain ResMed CPAP masks. Compatible masks for the AirMini are as follows:

  • ResMed AirFit™ N20 Nasal Mask
  • ResMed AirFit™ F20 Full Face
  • ResMed AirTouch™ F20 Full Face
  • ResMed AirFit™ P10 Nasal Pillow

When considering another CPAP, APAP or BiPAP machine from ResMed or any other manufacturer, mask compatibility extends to all brands. The AirMini uses non-standard tubing to connect the machine to the mask, and is the primary reason why other masks won't work with the AirMini. Despite this issue, many of our customers consider the AirMini to be an excellent machine.

What comes with my machine?
Machines come with a six foot hose, power cord, at least one filter, and manuals. Most manufacturers include a carrying case which is designed specifically for their equipment. CPAP, APAP, and BiPAP machines do not come with a delivery system or mask. CPAP masks must be purchased separately.

To see the list of what specifically comes with each machine, you can Browse for a machine. Then on the product page, click the "Specs" tab to see a full list of what comes with the machine.

Do all CPAPs use filters?
Yes, all CPAPs use at least one filter that is usually a type of foam material and washable. Some CPAPs offer finer filtration with the addition of a disposable paper filter.

Cleaning and changing filters is the only maintenance required for a CPAP machine.

The filters are located at the back of the machine at the air intake.
Are prescriptions required for mask, machine, humidifier, and EPAP purchases?

Yes. Federal law requires we have a valid prescription on file before we ship your mask, machine, humidifier, or EPAP therapy, including Provent and Bongo RX. You will also need a prescription to purchase the Nightbalance POSA device.

Solid, simple, low cost machine

Verified purchase | Mar. 15, 2011 | Verified CPAP.com Customer
I replaced a worn out Invacare Polaris, which I have had good results with over the past 5 years, with this machine, due to its cost and availability. In the month I have used it the performance has been flawless. I am always a little wary of a new machine, by a new manufacturer, but the reviews I read were pretty positive, and am very happy with it so far. CPAP set the pressure, and I just put on the water reservoir, filled it, and it was good to go. I would definitedly recommend this machine to a friend.
