ResMed AirMini™ Details
If you’re looking for a light and compact travel CPAP machine, the ResMed AirMini offers a premium therapy experience in one of the smallest packages on the market. Weighing in at just over three-fifths of a pound, this Auto CPAP makes traveling with humidification easy. ResMed has designed the HumidX™ Waterless Component to allow you to receive all of the benefits of a heated humidifier while leaving the distilled water at home.
This compact CPAP machine fits in the palm of your hand, which makes packing your machine hassle-free. With HumidX, the space-saving AirMini adds moisture while you sleep so that you can cross a humidifier off of your packing list as well. The HumidX Plus is also available for more arid climates and higher elevations where there’s less moisture in the air. Want to continue tracking your sleep on the go? The AirMini connects to your phone via Bluetooth, so you can track your leak rate, usage hours, and events per hour while traveling.
If you’re looking for drawbacks to this travel CPAP machine, there are very few. Some AirMini owners note that the machine isn’t as quiet as they’re used to, but it’s still quieter than some bulkier full-sized machines on the market. You can expect the AirMini to produce a sound similar to white noise, so if a sound machine is usually on your packing list, you may be able to leave it at home.
Some people have also disliked the lack of data compatibility between the MyAir by ResMed App and the AirMini by ResMed App as well as some shortcomings of the AirMini App’s reporting features. In addition, the AirMini was previously pretty restrictive because it was only compatible with only a handful of specific ResMed masks. However, you now have the freedom of choice thanks to the Zephair AirMini Universal Adapter , which allows you to use any standard hose and mask with the AirMini device. As far as HumidX and HumidX Plus are concerned, while helpful, these waterless humidification cartridges can only be equipped on the N20 for AirMini , N30 for AirMini , and P10 for AirMini masks.
Overall, the AirMini is an industry leader in travel CPAP machines for a reason. We recommend this device for frequent flyers that don’t mind a higher price point or sleeping with white noise.

Transcend Micro™ Details
The Transcend Micro Auto from Somnetics is the latest travel CPAP machine on the market. Weighing in at less than half a pound and measuring about the size of a baseball, the Transcend Micro is redefining convenience and has taken the mantle of “World’s Smallest CPAP” away from the ResMed AirMini. Small yet mighty, the Micro Travel CPAP features automatic pressure adjustments, ramp technology, automatic start/stop, and an adjustable pressure relief setting just like you’d expect from a full-sized unit.
While this list of features is already impressive for a device of this size, what really sets this machine apart from the rest is the convenient drying mode, waterless humidification, near-universal mask compatibility, built-in sound and vibration dampening technology, and the included WhisperSoft Muffler, which helps reduce the noise coming through your CPAP tubing. The 30-minute drying mode is especially helpful when you are going off-the-grid and can’t hang your mask and hose to dry throughout the day. The Micro’s drying mode helps prevent condensation and contamination build-up, which deters the formation of mold, bacteria, and unwanted odors.
Perhaps, most importantly, the Transcend Micro is compatible with virtually any CPAP mask, except for masks that are specifically designed for other machines, such as the AirMini-only masks like the AirFit N30 for AirMini or the AirFit P10 for AirMini . In addition, the Reusable PureFresh Air Filters (coming soon) are designed to last around six months between replacements, but you’ll want to replace them sooner if they show signs of wear and tear or if you are traveling to a dusty, dry climate. Gently hand wash and dry your filter every two weeks or so to keep it fresh.
In terms of drawbacks, there are a few to be considered. Mainly, you will need to use the tubing included with the Micro since the end that connects to the device is much smaller than a typical CPAP air outlet. For those that prefer heated humidification over waterless humidification, you’ll also be out of luck with the Micro as it doesn’t support a full humidifier, unlike the Apex XT Auto featured below. There have also been some issues with getting the MySleepDash companion app to be fully operational, but since this is a relatively new technology for Transcend, we expect that the app experience will go more smoothly after a couple of software updates and some feedback from Micro owners. We will update this article once that occurs.
Overall, the Transcend Micro is a welcomed addition to the travel CPAP market and one that we believe will stand the test of time. Please note that at the time of this writing, the Transcend HMEs for waterless humidification and the replacement air filters are not yet in stock, but we will be updating this article as soon as they’re available. The Transcend HME is required for waterless humidification and will not be able to provide moisture to your therapy air without it.

Breas Z2™ Auto Details
The Breas Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine stands out in the crowded market of travel CPAP devices due to its impressive blend of compact design, comfort-enhancing technology, and user-friendly features. Weighing just 10.4 ounces and fitting comfortably in the palm of your hand, the Z2 Auto is perfectly suited for frequent travelers and outdoor adventurers alike.
One of the biggest advantages of the Z2 Auto is its whisper-quiet operation—only 26 decibels—making it 29% quieter than its predecessor, the Z1 Auto. Enhanced by the included Q-Tube Muffler, this quiet design ensures minimal disruption to your sleep or your partner’s rest. Additionally, the Z2 Auto employs Breas' advanced Z-Breathe algorithm to provide smooth, comfortable breathing patterns, automatically adjusting pressure in response to your unique respiratory needs.
Notable among its features is the innovative waterless humidification system, which uses Heat Moisture Exchange (HME) technology to recycle moisture from your own breath, eliminating the need for bulky water chambers. The Z2 also boasts a backlit LCD display, easy-to-use three-button interface, and the Nitelog companion app for convenient therapy tracking and remote management, allowing you to easily monitor your sleep health and therapy effectiveness.
The universal tubing adapter ensures compatibility with virtually all CPAP masks (excluding AirMini-specific masks), providing flexibility in your equipment choices. Additionally, the device is FAA-approved for in-flight use and compatible with multiple portable battery options, including solar charging capabilities—perfect for off-grid adventures.
However, it's worth noting a few limitations: the Z2 Auto requires regular replacement of disposable filters and HME cartridges, which some users might find inconvenient. The proprietary Qtube muffler foam requires frequent cleaning to maintain effectiveness, and the machine does not support traditional heated humidification, which may be a consideration for some users.
Overall, the Z2 Auto successfully combines portability, quiet performance, and versatile comfort features, making it one of the best options currently available for travel-friendly CPAP therapy.

How do travel CPAP machines compare to full size CPAP machines?
You may be surprised to learn that standard CPAP machines and smaller travel devices actually share a lot of the same features, with two big exceptions—humidification and noise level.
Humidification
While standard machines have built-in humidification with a water tank, travel machines don't have room for a humidifier chamber. Instead, they add moisture to your CPAP air using waterless humidity, which collects the moisture from the air you breathe and releases it back into your CPAP air.
These devices can be purchased separately or in a bundle with your travel machine. All you do is insert them between your mask and your tubing, and you're ready to sleep.
Noise Level
Compared to standard machines that sit at your bedside, travel devices are not the quietest CPAP machines out there. This is due to the compact size of the machine compared to the size of the motor.
Usually, these portable options are only a couple of decibels louder, but some reviewers say that it's enough of a difference to be noticeable. The good news is there are ways to make your CPAP machine quieter, such as using the Q-tube muffler.
What to look for when buying a CPAP for travel
In comparison to standard machines, travel-friendly CPAP machines are small, lightweight, and portable. If it’s your first time traveling with a CPAP machine , it’s important to note that travel machines are TSA-friendly, and most units are FAA-approved for in-flight use. If your flight is short, a small CPAP machine makes disassembly, packing, and reassembly a breeze!
If your travel machine has the waterless humidification feature, you will also need to pack your machine’s accompanying heat moisture exchange (HME) cartridge, which allows you to leave the distilled water at home. Tiny but mighty, the HME cartridges trap the humidity from your exhaled breath and recirculate it back for your inhaled breath.
It’s also important to understand how a mini CPAP machine is different from a standard machine. A portable CPAP device has some added benefits that will ease some of the stress while traveling.
A good travel CPAP machine:
- Can Plug Into a Cigarette Lighter to Draw Power From Your Car’s Battery
- Can Be Used With a DC Cable Converter to Allow You to Easily Sleep On-the-Go
- Has Options for Extending the Battery Life —Perfect for Long Flights or Camping Trips
- Is Small, Lightweight, and FAA-Compliant—Safe for Use on a Plane
- Can Still Deliver Quality Therapy Despite Its Small Size
Now that you know some of the standard features of a travel CPAP machine, it’s time to find the right one for you!
Tips for choosing a travel CPAP
Travel Frequency
Frequent and infrequent travelers have different needs; some people may want a dedicated travel machine while others may simply prefer a bedside unit that happens to be easy to travel with.
Types of Trips
Most dedicated travel CPAP machines are FAA-approved for in-flight use, but more traditional units may not be. Someone who does more camping than flying may prefer a more barebones unit that’s simple to operate when off-the-grid over a machine with more bells and whistles.
Price
Travel CPAP machines are typically more affordable than their full-sized counterparts, though you can still expect to spend around $600 to $900 for a compact machine from a reputable brand.
Keep in mind that some travel machines require you to purchase more equipment than others, such as the AirMini, which requires you to purchase an adapter to use with your compatible CPAP mask.
Doctor’s Recommendations
Since you can’t buy a CPAP machine without a prescription, you may have already talked with your healthcare provider about the best equipment for your needs. Whether there are specific machine settings or comfort features you require or there’s a particular mask style that works best for you, be sure that the machine you’re considering will be able to deliver the therapy you deserve.
Sound Level
Most travel devices are only slightly noisier than their full-sized counterparts, and many come with a muffler to reduce noise.
Some owners report that their travel machines operate at a higher pitch than their home machine, but most people are able to adjust or find solutions like mufflers or ear plugs.
Machine Type
Due to size constraints and engineering hurdles, a pressure setting on your bedside unit may not behave the same way on a travel machine. So even if both are set to 12 cm H2O, the experience still may be different.
For this reason, we recommend traveling with an APAP machine. It’s much easier to let the machine react to your needs rather than relying on a set pressure that may not be enough for you at the moment or feel weaker from your travel machine.
Comfort Features
Outside of doctor’s recommendations, you may personally prefer or even require specific comfort settings such as ramp or auto start/stop. Be sure that the machine you’re considering has the features that are most important to you for a restful sleep apnea therapy experience.
This also applies to humidifier usage; if you’re someone who requires a standard humidifier or if you’re traveling to a drier climate where you might need one, your options will decrease. However, if you’re content with utilizing waterless humidification, you can save yourself from having to pack distilled water and travel lighter in the process.
Data Tracking
If data tracking is essential to you, you might consider a more high-tech option with real-time reporting to the machine’s compatible cellphone app. Keep in mind that some travel machines can’t sync or view data until you’re back home with your PC.
Accessories
Accessories for a travel CPAP device include things like external batteries for charging or operating your machine, a travel case or carrying bag to protect your equipment, tubing or mask adapters (such as the Zephair Universal AirMini Adapter), or waterless humidification devices (heat moisture exchange units).
When you decide on your travel machine budget, be sure to factor in the cost of any additional travel accessories you’d like as well.
Warranty
Most travel machines have a two-year warranty, though there are some longer and shorter exceptions. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s warranty for your device to be clear on whether or not it protects you in situations you may find yourself in while traveling.
FAA Approval
As we mentioned earlier, most travel CPAP machines are FAA-approved and TSA-friendly, though it never hurts to double-check with the manufacturer’s specifications. Some airlines will also have different rules/requirements than others, so be sure to inquire about any policies they may have regarding CPAP machine use in flight.
Power Consumption/Requirements
Most machines can run off of outlets in almost any country with the appropriate travel plug adapter. Still, it’s always a good idea to be familiar with where you’re traveling and the power draw of your machine. For camping and off-the-grid activities like RV travel, it’s also important to know if you’ll need to add any adapters or inverters to your CPAP setup.
Frequently asked questions
How much do travel CPAP machines cost?
Cheaper travel CPAP machines start in the neighborhood of $600 and can be as expensive as $1,200. On average, you’ll spend about $800 for a quality travel machine.
Does insurance cover travel CPAP machines?
While it’s always encouraged to check these specifics with your insurance company, many will not cover the cost of a travel CPAP.
Can I use a regular mask with a travel machine?
In most cases, yes! Most travel machines will include a hose or mask adapter or be universally compatible. We also offer additional adapters to work around some machine restrictions.
Can I use a travel CPAP at home?
Yes! A travel CPAP machine is perfectly capable of delivering quality therapy as a full-time home unit. It is worth noting, however, that parts in your travel machine may wear more or show their age more quickly than on a larger unit. You should also consider how important a suite of comfort features is to you, as travel machines may not have the same capabilities in that regard.
Can I use a travel CPAP while I'm flying?
Yes! If a device is FAA-approved, then you can use it during the flight as long as you meet the requirements of your airliner. Examples of some requirements would be requiring a 48-hour approval notice before the flight or requiring a separate CPAP battery with a capacity equal to or greater than 150% of the expected flight time. Check with your airline for more details.
Final thoughs
Wherever and however you’ll be traveling, there is a compact CPAP machine suitable for your trip! Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice a good night’s sleep without proper sleep apnea therapy on your next adventure.
Remember: The best travel CPAP machine is the one that will give you a therapy experience that’s closest to what you’re used to getting at home. Traveling can disrupt the usual cadence and rhythm of our lives, initiating a stress response in the body.
By finding a semi-familiar product that will help you maintain your CPAP routine on the go, you’ll be setting yourself up for a healthier and happier trip overall.
Safe travels!
